May 11 to 17 is the National Disaster Prevention and Reduction Publicity Week, with the theme "Everyone talks about safety, everyone knows emergency response—focusing on improving grassroots disaster prevention and risk avoidance capabilities." In light of the characteristics of campus fires, fire departments across the country have gone into schools to carry out publicity and education activities in a variety of forms.
Fire Safety Knowledge Enters Schools: A Required "Safety Course"
At the blast of the starter's whistle, several firefighters, water guns and hoses in hand, dashed swiftly forward. This was the 400-meter, five-hose, three-gun drill demonstration simulating a rescue scene by firefighters at the first "Fire Safety Sports Meet" held at a middle school in Jining, Shandong.
In addition to listening on site to firefighters' detailed explanations of fire, earthquake and other rescue equipment, the students also personally experienced self-rescue methods for escaping fires by taking part in competitive events such as "simulated firefighting," testing how well they had mastered fire safety knowledge and their ability to respond to emergencies.
The fire department in Jiujiang, Jiangxi, together with local hospitals, organized an earthquake emergency evacuation drill at a school. At the signal to start the earthquake drill, the students quickly ducked under their desks, using books or their arms to protect their heads; then, under the guidance of their teachers, the students of each class evacuated in an orderly manner to an open outdoor area. At the event, firefighters and medical personnel also explained how to identify hazards in daily life and, when faced with injured persons, the key measures for promptly performing CPR and self-rescue care as quickly as possible, enabling teachers and students to learn emergency safety knowledge immersively from multiple angles—observing, feeling and practicing—and thus to understand more deeply the importance of disaster prevention and reduction.
Open Day Held at the National Earthquake Emergency Rescue Training Base
Recently, the Publicity and Education Center of the Ministry of Emergency Management and the China Earthquake Emergency Search and Rescue Center held a public open day at the National Earthquake Emergency Rescue Training Base.
During the open day, the public could not only visit and experience exhibition areas such as the earthquake prevention and disaster reduction knowledge popularization area and emergency rescue equipment, but also learn about the basic concepts of earthquakes, types of earthquake disasters, monitoring and early warning, disaster prevention, and emergency avoidance from multiple dimensions through technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality and human-computer interaction.
In the 4D motion theater, visitors can experience the occurrence of an earthquake immersively through the wraparound screen and motion seats, and learn emergency sheltering, on-site first aid and the relevant skills needed for community emergency response through a home-environment earthquake simulation vibration platform, a building-damage ruins corridor and a semi-realistic street environment.
In the earthquake search and rescue dog exhibition area, visitors can interact and get up close with the search and rescue dogs; in the emergency rescue equipment exhibition area, they can also learn about earthquake rescue modular equipment vehicles, water rescue equipment, life detection instruments, professional rescue equipment packs and other emergency rescue equipment and their applications.
