The Beijing Meteorological Bureau announced on the 15th that this year Beijing's summer start date is May 7, 13 days earlier than the average summer start date (1991-2020 average).
Since May, temperatures in Beijing have risen overall. According to China Weather Network statistics, over the past week, under the control of an upper-level warm ridge, temperatures in Beijing were higher than the same period in normal years most of the time, with maximum temperatures generally around 28°C; on the 8th the maximum temperature reached 29.5°C, and on the 13th temperatures climbed above 30°C for the first time.
According to the meteorological standard for summer, summer begins when the 5-day moving average temperature steadily passes 22°C. The Beijing Meteorological Bureau stated that starting from May 10, Beijing's moving average temperature series began to be greater than or equal to 22°C, and by May 14 it had reached 5 consecutive days of 22°C or above; the first date in the corresponding temperature series with a temperature greater than or equal to 22°C is May 7, which is this year's summer start date for Beijing.
On the 15th, Beijing had clear skies. The reporter saw in downtown Beijing that short sleeves, skirts and other attire had taken over the streets, and many citizens carried sun umbrellas and wore sun hats, sunglasses and other gear when going out to protect against the scorching sun.
Regarding future weather trends, China Weather Network indicates that the North China Plain will experience its first high-temperature weather process of the year, and attention should be paid to preventing heatstroke and cooling down. From May 16 to 20, the maximum temperature at the Beijing Nanjiao Observatory is expected to remain above 30°C.
According to the May natural disaster risk situation analysis report released by the Beijing Municipal Emergency Management Bureau, precipitation in most parts of Beijing in May is expected to be slightly less than the same period in normal years, and the average temperature slightly higher than the same period in normal years. According to historical disaster statistics, in May Beijing sees an increase in severe convective weather such as strong winds and hail, and the number of wind and hail disasters rises somewhat, with a relatively large impact on urban operations, construction, crop production and other fields. Beijing will strengthen monitoring, forecasting and comprehensive assessment, promptly report forecast results, and release early warning information and disaster risk tips through multiple channels.
