Recently, the Shihuiyao Tunnel on Section 10 of the Xinjiang Urumqi-Yuli Expressway, constructed by CCCC Third Harbor Engineering Co., Ltd., was successfully holed through on both tubes. The Shihuiyao Tunnel on Section 10 of the Urumqi-Yuli Expressway is 2,068 meters long and is a controlling, high-difficulty and key project of the contract, featuring small-clearance portals and a separated-tube expressway tunnel alignment. The successful breakthrough of the Shihuiyao Tunnel has laid a solid foundation for the smooth completion of the Baluntai-Korla section of the Urumqi-Yuli Expressway by the end of this year.
The rock mass of the Shihuiyao Tunnel has well-developed joints and fissures, is highly fractured, and the surrounding rock of the cavern has poor self-stabilization capacity; Grade IV and Grade V rock together account for 96.4% of the total tunnel length, making construction here akin to "boring a hole through a block of tofu." The mountain bodies at the tunnel portals are steep and contain natural landslide surfaces, and the shallow-buried section of the tunnel is long, making construction extremely difficult.
Facing the harsh construction environment, all employees of the Shihuiyao Tunnel project on Section 10 of the Urumqi-Yuli Expressway held firm to their convictions and stayed focused on their goals. The project department set up a tunnel work area at the tunnel entrance, with construction workers, surveyors, safety officers, and testing personnel stationed on site for the long term, carrying out round-the-clock uninterrupted construction and working against wall charts. To ensure smooth completion of construction, the project team persisted in identifying risks at the tunnel face, strengthened hazard identification and rectification, and strictly followed the principles of "advance pipe forepoling, weak blasting, short excavation, strong support, early closure, frequent measurement, timely invert installation, and prompt lining" in organizing construction. They used ground-penetrating radar and TSP advanced geological prediction information to track the surrounding rock conditions ahead in real time, and adopted targeted excavation methods according to geological conditions. The tunnel lining was designed and constructed as a composite lining based on the principles of the "New Austrian Tunneling Method," maximizing tunnel safety.
To achieve safe excavation, ensure quality, and steadily advance quality engineering construction, the project department insisted on attention to detail and strict inspection. The project department strengthened the leadership shift and supervision/inspection systems, strictly implemented the technical, quality, and safety briefing systems to ensure briefings reached frontline work teams, formulated strict inspection and acceptance procedures, and used a series of information-based measures such as intelligent facial recognition, in-tunnel personnel positioning, and real-time video monitoring to "escort" tunnel construction. At the same time, the project team carried out standardized surveying work and established strict review and verification systems for monitoring and measurement data to ensure data accuracy, achieving "millimeter-level" high-precision breakthrough in the two-way tunnel excavation.
It is reported that the Urumqi-Yuli Expressway is a key transportation corridor that breaks through the transportation barrier between northern and southern Xinjiang, and is currently the largest PPP project under construction in China and one of the first demonstration projects of the Ministry of Transport's Peaceful Century Quality Engineering initiative. After opening to traffic, the drive from Urumqi to Korla is expected to be shortened from more than 7 hours to about 3 hours, which is of great significance for advancing the construction of the "One Port, Five Centers" in the core area of the Silk Road Economic Belt and for promoting economic development in northern and southern Xinjiang and the development of regional advantageous resources.
