At 14:18 on April 3, as the last steel box girder segment was precisely positioned, the main bridge of the Longtan Yangtze River Bridge was successfully closed, with the north and south banks successfully "joining hands," laying a solid foundation for achieving the goal of completion within the year.
The Longtan Yangtze River Bridge connects the cities of Nanjing and Yangzhou. It is an important component of the Yizheng-to-Lukou Airport Expressway in the Jiangsu Province expressway network plan and the Nanjing metropolitan area expressway ring, and is a key transportation facility for the integrated development of Nanjing, Zhenjiang, and Yangzhou. The project starts at the Longshan interchange on Provincial Highway S356 in Yizheng City, crosses the Yangtze River southward, passes through Longtan in Nanjing, and ends at the Longtan interchange on Provincial Highway S338. The route is approximately 5.8 kilometers long and is built to a two-way, six-lane expressway standard with a design speed of 100 kilometers per hour. The main bridge has a span of 1,560 meters, "crossing the river in a single span," and is a single-span suspension bridge with a steel box girder. The south tower is 237.5 meters high and the north tower is 235.5 meters high; the bridge towers feature a "two dragons playing with a pearl" landscape design. The south anchorage is a rectangular caisson foundation, and the north anchorage is a circular diaphragm wall foundation. The north and south approach bridges are steel-concrete composite girder structures.
The main bridge of the Longtan Yangtze River Bridge adopts a flat steel box girder structure with a total of 110 segments, including 103 segments in the main span and 7 segments in the south side span. The heaviest girder segment weighs 412.8 tons and was lifted jointly by two 600-ton-class cable cranes, while all other segments were lifted by a single cable crane. For the steel box girders within the navigable channel, the process of "barge transport, temporary navigation restriction, in-water positioning, and in-situ lifting" was adopted, with synchronous lifting carried out sequentially from midspan toward the main towers. For the steel box girders in the near-shore area, the process of "barge transport, vertical lifting, swinging into position, and translational placement" was adopted, with sequential installation and positioning.
The Longtan Yangtze River Bridge is located in an area with open waters and busy shipping. In response to challenges such as the heavy weight of the steel box girders, high positioning accuracy requirements, great pressure from closing the Yangtze River navigation channel, and complex construction organization, the Longtan Yangtze River Bridge Construction Command of the Provincial Transportation Engineering Construction Bureau, together with the construction unit, discussed and optimized the box girder lifting construction plan multiple times, invited experts to review and check it, and repeatedly rehearsed it to ensure the plan was safe and feasible. During the lifting process, construction was carried out strictly in accordance with the established plan, and an intelligent monitoring system for steel box girder lifting was used. By monitoring in real time the in-plane tilt angle of the girder segments during lifting, the attitude of the lifting devices, the stress state, and changes in key structural stresses of the cable cranes, safety monitoring and predictive warning during lifting were further strengthened, safeguarding lifting operations in all respects and ensuring that the entire lifting process was safe, orderly, and controllable.
Once completed, the Longtan Yangtze River Bridge will be of great significance in supporting the Yangtze River Economic Belt development strategy, promoting the integrated development of the Yangtze River city cluster and the Nanjing-Zhenjiang-Yangzhou region, accelerating the construction of a comprehensive multidimensional transportation corridor, optimizing the layout of river-crossing channels, and improving the expressway network. At that time, it will take 5 minutes to travel from Longtan in Nanjing to Yizheng in Yangzhou and half an hour to reach the main urban area of Yangzhou.
