On the 25th, reporters learned that Chinese medical experts have, for the first time globally, identified protein biomarkers that predict sensitivity to chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer. The results of this study will rewrite the current relevant treatment guidelines and are expected to improve the overall survival rate of pancreatic cancer treatment.

Professor Fan Jia, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, spoke highly of this research achievement. He stated: "This study marks a new era in proteomics-driven precision diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer."

The relevant results obtained by the pancreatic cancer research team at Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (hereinafter referred to as Ruijin Hospital) were published online in the internationally authoritative medical journal Nature Medicine (Issue 3, 2024). The study successfully answered the relevant "bottleneck" questions in the current field of pancreatic cancer treatment, making it possible for chemotherapy-sensitive patients with resectable pancreatic cancer to achieve long-term survival by receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy before surgery.

It is reported that the "bottleneck" issues in the field of pancreatic cancer treatment mainly include: who is sensitive to chemotherapy, and to which chemotherapy drugs they are sensitive.

According to reports, the expert team adopted a multi-omics approach to conduct research and analysis on numerous patients with more than three years of follow-up data, and successfully constructed a proteomics-based prognostic prediction model for pancreatic cancer. The study identified two important protein biomarkers: NDUFB8 and CEMIP2, which can accurately predict chemotherapy sensitivity.

Ruijin Hospital disclosed that the research results were independently validated through immunohistochemical staining in three external cohorts at home and abroad (the Greater Paris region pancreatic cancer cohort in France, the Shanghai Cancer Hospital cohort, and the Changhai Hospital cohort), demonstrating strong clinical applicability.

The study was completed by Professor Shen Baiyong's team at the Pancreatic Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Ruijin Hospital (Shanghai Key Laboratory of Pancreatic Cancer Translational Research), and Academician Chen Saijuan's team of the Chinese Academy of Engineering at the National Major Infrastructure (Shanghai) completed all the multi-omics testing and bioinformatics analysis for the project.
