On March 10, as the last 40-meter-long, 140-ton precast T-beam was slowly lowered into place, the left carriageway of the Taohua Island Bridge on the Jiyuan-Xin'an Expressway, constructed by China Railway No. 4 Engineering Group, was successfully completed. The completion of this milestone opened up the transport corridor for the rotary saddles and cable saddles of the Jiyuan-Xin'an Expressway Yellow River Bridge, laying the foundation for further accelerating the construction of the Yellow River Bridge.
The Taohua Island Bridge is located in the Xiaolangdi Reservoir area of the Yellow River in Jiyuan City, Henan Province. With a total length of 929 meters and a two-way six-lane standard, it is the longest bridge on the Jiyuan section of the Jiyuan-Xin'an Expressway. The bridge uses 40-meter precast T-beams, with 7 beams erected per span and a total of 322 beams required for both carriageways. To the south, the Taohua Island Bridge connects to the Bajiaoshan Tunnel; beyond the tunnel to the south lies the world's first rotary-cable suspension bridge —— the Jiyuan-Xin'an Expressway Yellow River Bridge.
To meet the schedule requirements for the Yellow River Bridge, during construction of the Taohua Island Bridge the technical staff decided, after discussion, to first achieve single-carriageway completion so as to secure the "lifeline" of the Yellow River Bridge. The project department of China Railway No. 4 Engineering Group strictly controlled all processes of the bridge construction and organized technical and safety briefings for the construction crews on multiple occasions. During precasting of the beams and slabs, advanced tooling and techniques such as vacuum grouting, intelligent tensioning and corrugated-duct positioning were adopted to ensure that the concrete strength and load-bearing capacity of the bridge met specification requirements. During beam erection, professional bridge-erection machines were used and dedicated personnel were assigned to direct operations, effectively reducing errors and ensuring precise positioning of the beams.
The Jiyuan-Xin'an Expressway starts at the Shaoyuan interchange of the Hebao Expressway in Jiyuan City, Henan Province, runs south through the Wangwushan-Daimeishan National Geopark, crosses the Xiaolangdi Reservoir area of the Yellow River, and ends at its junction with the Lianyungang-Horgos Expressway. Once completed, the project will effectively strengthen transport links between Jiyuan and Luoyang, help connect the tourism resources of scenic areas on both banks of the Yellow River into a chain, and be of great significance for improving the expressway network in northwestern Henan and promoting the integrated development of transportation and tourism along the route.
