On March 10, the main bridge of the Shanhou River Grand Bridge—a key control node of the Xuwei to Guanyun section (Phase I) of the Liansu Expressway—was successfully closed, marking major progress in the construction of the Lianyungang section of the Liansu Expressway and laying a solid foundation for the full-line breakthrough of the project.
The Phase I project of the Liansu Expressway starts 1 kilometer east of the intersection of Fangyang Road and National Highway 228 in Xuwei New District, Lianyungang City, and ends at the intersection of the project road and the Changshen Expressway south of Xiaoyi Town, Guanyun County, Lianyungang City, with a total length of 40.653 kilometers. It is designed as a two-way four-lane expressway with a speed of 120 kilometers per hour. Among them, the Shanhou River Grand Bridge is located in Section III, with a total length of 1,981.2 meters and a bridge width of 27 meters. It is constructed by Nantong Road and Bridge Engineering Co., Ltd. using the cantilever casting method with form travelers.
During the project construction process, the builders organized carefully and strictly implemented design and construction standards. With the construction philosophy of "Safe Liansu, Quality Liansu, Green Liansu, Smart Liansu, Innovative Liansu, and Clean Liansu," they overcame numerous difficulties and ensured project quality and safety.
It is reported that since the start of construction, land acquisition and demolition as well as soft foundation works along the entire Phase I line of the Liansu Expressway have been successfully completed, and subgrade and bridge works have been fully launched. In 2023, an investment of 2.617 billion yuan was completed, accounting for 101% of the annual plan and exceeding the annual target. The project was recognized as a municipal-level "Demonstration Project" for the Century-Old Quality and Safety Project and a provincial-level "Demonstration Project" for Safe Construction Sites.
"Through the joint efforts of all participants, the subgrade works of the Liansu Phase I project have now been completed by 90% and are in the preloading stage; the bridge works have been completed by 90% and are in the final stage of the bridge deck system, with handover to the pavement contractor planned for June this year. The Phase II project of the Lianyungang section of the Liansu Expressway is planned to start construction in September this year and be fully completed and opened to traffic in 2027," introduced Yu Zhilong, deputy director of the Liansu Expressway Project Office.
Mao Shantong, commander of the Lianyungang Expressway Construction Command and director of the Municipal Transport Bureau, expressed gratitude to the vast number of builders in Liansu Section III for their hard work over more than 500 days and nights, and expressed the hope that they will continue their efforts to ensure the later-stage construction of the bridge is completed on schedule and with high quality, laying a good foundation for the overall advancement of the project.
Next, the Municipal Expressway Construction Command and the Liansu Project Office will further strengthen organization, plan scientifically, and reverse the construction schedule to accelerate all work related to the Liansu Expressway construction, ensuring that the construction targets and tasks assigned by the Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government and the Provincial Transportation Construction Bureau are completed on time and with high quality.
