On the morning of March 8, with the rumbling start of a 550-type large-tonnage rotary drilling rig, the main pier pile foundation of the Hailong Bridge, a key control project of the Guangzhou-Zhuhai section reconstruction and expansion project, was successfully drilled. This is another major progress following the project's successful completion of the **th traffic conversion from Zhongshan urban area to the Zhuhai toll station.
The Guangzhou-Zhuhai section reconstruction and expansion project starts at the Tanwei Interchange in Huangge Town, Nansha District, Guangzhou, passes through Huangge Town and Hengli Town in Nansha District of Guangzhou, and Sanjiao Town, Minzhong Street, Gangkou Town, Torch Development Zone and Nanlang Street in Zhongshan City, and ends at the Zhuhai Toll Station in Nanlang Street, Cuiheng New District, Zhongshan City, with a mileage of about 50.4 kilometers. Its key control project, the Hailong Bridge, crosses the Xiaolan Waterway and the Jiya Waterway. Among them, the Xiaolan Waterway Bridge adopts a double-tower, double-cable-plane prestressed concrete girder cable-stayed bridge, with a span combination of (135+255+135) m and a main bridge total length of 525 m; the Jiya Waterway Bridge adopts a prestressed concrete continuous rigid-frame bridge, with a span combination of (120+170+99) m and a main bridge total length of 389 m. Because the old bridge is located on a large-radius horizontal curve in plan, in order to adapt to the road alignment requirements and reduce land acquisition area, the new bridge will be designed as a long-span curved cable-stayed bridge, which brings great challenges to the construction of the bridge.
The main pier of the Hailong Bridge has a total of 42 pile foundations (26 for the Xiaolan Waterway Bridge and 16 for the Jiya Waterway Bridge). This drilling is for pile No. Z3-3 of the Xiaolan Waterway Bridge, with a pile length of about 68 m and a designed concrete volume of 483 m³ for a single pile. The main pier foundation will use bored cast-in-place piles with a diameter of 3 m. Due to the complex geological conditions in the construction area, the thickness of soft overburden such as silty clay exceeding 30 m, and the new bridge pile foundations being adjacent to the old bridge and river embankment, measures such as 36 m long steel casings and optimization of the CMC mud mix ratio were adopted in this construction to prevent disturbance to the old bridge and river embankment.
“Drilling construction is one of the most important links in bored cast-in-place pile construction. To ensure hole-forming quality, before drilling, the geological conditions of each stratum were checked in detail, and key processes such as drill pipe pressure, drilling rate, mud indicators, and underwater concrete pouring were strictly controlled. At the same time, in-situ solidification technology was used to treat waste mud, realizing green recycling of mud, ensuring the pile-forming quality of ultra-long, ultra-large deep-water pile foundations while protecting water resources.” introduced Wang Xiaojia, project manager of the TJ3 bid section of the Guangzhou-Zhuhai section reconstruction and expansion project of Poly Changda.
To accelerate the bridge construction, the project management office urged the participating units to start work immediately upon entering the site. In only 2 months after entering the site, the approval procedures for maritime affairs, waterways, water conservancy, etc. were completed. In less than 1 month after commencement, the erection of the about 4,000 square meter main pier trestle platform on the south bank of the Xiaolan Waterway was basically completed, and the filling of the approach bridge access roads and platforms was fully started, exceeding the scheduled work tasks.
The project team organized several technical special meetings, planned scientifically and promoted strongly, optimized and improved the construction plan, scientifically allocated various resources, achieved seamless connection between management at all levels and the construction site, laid a solid foundation for the smooth drilling of the first pile, and also opened the prelude to subsequent high-quality large-scale pile foundation construction. It is expected that the pile foundation construction of the Xiaolan Waterway Bridge will be completed in June, the main pier pile foundation drilling of the Jiya Waterway Bridge will start in May, and the construction of the new Hailong Bridge is planned to be completed by the end of 2026.
The project started construction in November 2022 and is planned to be completed and opened to traffic across the entire line in 2027. Among them, the about 15-kilometer section from Zhongshan urban area to the Zhuhai toll station will be completed and opened to traffic in June 2024. As an important part of the “A”-shaped development main axis in the core area of the development axis of the core region of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the project carries the task of being the central axis on the west bank of the Pearl River for transportation in the Greater Bay Area. After reconstruction and expansion, it will further enhance the connection and transfer capacity of cross-river channels at the Pearl River Estuary.
