On March 6, reporters learned from the Management and Protection Bureau of the Zhenkang Nanpeng River Provincial Nature Reserve in Lincang City, Yunnan Province that the animal "canteens" built by the bureau within the reserve are highly popular with wildlife, attracting frequent "dining" visits from national first-class key protected wild animals such as green peafowl and Indochinese gray langurs, and precious video footage has been captured.

The Zhenkang Nanpeng River Provincial Nature Reserve is located in southwestern Yunnan Province and was established in 1999. It is a tropical area of the Nujiang River system in Yunnan Province, with a unique natural environment, diverse landform types, and very rich wild animal and plant resources.

Ye Zujian, assistant engineer at the Scientific Research and Monitoring Institute of the Nanpeng River Reserve Management and Protection Bureau, introduced that a total of 2,656 species of wild vascular plants and 524 species of vertebrates are distributed within the Nanpeng River Reserve. Among them, there are as many as 70 species of national first-class and second-class key protected wild plants, and 91 species of national first-class and second-class key protected wild animals.

"Green peafowl are very rare and are distributed in only a few places in Yunnan, China," Ye Zujian introduced. In 2015, the Nanpeng River Reserve Management and Protection Bureau installed 20 sets of infrared cameras within its jurisdiction and began investigating and studying green peafowl.

In 2018, the Nanpeng River Reserve Management and Protection Bureau captured green peafowl on camera for the first time, and after 2019 they were photographed many times; "On January 19, 2023, 8 were photographed at the same time, and the scene was especially beautiful," Ye Zujian said. According to monitoring, the number of green peafowl in the Nanpeng River Reserve has increased year by year, and so far the number is about 40.

In order to continue carrying out green peafowl protection work well, in 2020 the Nanpeng River Reserve Management and Protection Bureau secured more than 3 million yuan in funding to restore green peafowl habitat and build animal "canteens," including 12 watering points and 9 feeding platforms, as well as 15 monitoring points. The watering points are regularly refilled with water, the feeding platforms are stocked with foods that green peafowl like, such as peas, and cameras at the monitoring points can transmit real-time images back to staff.

Yang Jun is a forest ranger in the Nanpeng River Reserve, and his daily work includes patrolling the mountains and protecting the forest and adding food to the animal "canteens." He introduced that the animal "canteens" are highly popular with wildlife; at one of the watering points, green peafowl and other animals come to drink water every day, and animals such as red muntjac and silver pheasant also frequently visit the feeding platforms to "dine."

It is reported that on February 1, 2024, monitoring equipment in the Nanpeng River Reserve also captured footage of multiple Indochinese gray langurs gathering to drink water and play. From 2015 to the present, many kinds of national key protected wild animals such as northern pig-tailed macaque, dhole, black-necked bar-tailed pheasant, and yellow-throated marten have been photographed, filling gaps in imagery and providing data support for carrying out scientific monitoring.
