Recently, the Key Project Management Office of the Ningguo Municipal Housing and Urban-Rural Development Bureau received a certification certificate from the World Record Certification Agency (WRCA), recognizing the north span of the Yongfu Bridge over the Helixi River as "the world's longest expanded-aperture stone arch bridge."
The Helixi Yongfu Bridge is located where Dongjin Road crosses the Dongjin River in Ningguo City. The bridge currently consists of two parallel spans, south and north; the north span is a 5-arch open-spandrel stone arch bridge with a total length of 191 meters and a deck width of 8.95 meters. After the aperture expansion, one additional open-spandrel arch with a span of 33 meters was added to the north span, bringing the total bridge length to 224 meters.
According to the introduction, because the bridge is located at the confluence of the Dongjin River, during each flood season the water flow is large and fast, and the old bridge obstructs the water considerably. Under extreme weather such as typhoons and rainstorms, backwater upstream of the bridge is severe, posing a significant flood-control hazard. After the aperture expansion of the Helixi Yongfu Bridge, the flood-passing cross-section was further enlarged, and the bridge's safe flood-discharge capacity was raised from roughly a 15-year return period to roughly an 18-year return period. The embankment elevation on the west bank of the Dongjin River will be no lower than the 30-year flood level, effectively improving the flood-control level of the Helixi area.
Since the development of the world's bridge construction industry to the present, bridges of various types have emerged one after another, but there has been no precedent for a project of the stone arch bridge aperture-expansion type. The successful completion of the Helixi ecological environment improvement and renovation project—the Double Bridge Aperture Expansion Project—can be described as a great feat in the history of bridge construction.
