On the morning of the 25th, Guangzhou Metro, together with multiple construction units, held a centralized launch ceremony for five shield tunneling machines at the construction site of the Shiliuyong working shaft on the Nansha-Zhuhai (Zhongshan) Intercity Railway, marking that the Guangzhou section of the line (Wanqingsha to Ershiyong) has entered the peak period of shield tunneling construction. According to the long-term plan, the line can be connected eastward in Nansha to the Shenzhen-Nansha-Zhongshan Intercity Railway (Shenzhen-Nansha-Zhongshan). By then, it will take 50 minutes from Guangzhou urban area to Zhongshan urban area, 60 minutes to Zhuhai urban area, and 75 minutes to Shenzhen urban area. If departing from Nansha, the travel time will be even shorter, and the ride experience will be like taking the metro.
The Guangzhou section of the Nansha-Zhuhai (Zhongshan) Intercity Railway has a total length of 19.1 kilometers, all laid underground, with a designed maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour. The line will build 3 new stations and 4 working shafts, among which Ershiyong Station is adjacent to the Nansha All-for-the-People Cultural and Sports Complex under construction, with a tight schedule and heavy tasks. The line will operate through-running with Metro Line 18, directly connecting Xiancun in the Zhujiang New Town CBD to the Nansha All-for-the-People Cultural and Sports Complex.
The line has 3 sections in total, all constructed using the shield tunneling method. After the launch of these 5 shield machines, a total of 6 shield machines will be under simultaneous construction in the sections. To ensure the safe launch of the shields on schedule, Guangzhou Metro, together with all participating parties, established a shield launch milestone support team and invited industry masters and experts from well-known domestic universities to the site multiple times for "diagnosis and consultation." In just 8 months, all structures and buildings required before the shields could be lowered and begin tunneling were completed. At the same time, a platform featuring terminal visualization and data modeling was established. In response to complex geological environments such as deep coastal silt and water-rich sand layers, shield tunneling plans and underpass contingency plans were formulated, risk pre-control was carried out, and preparations related to the shield launch were steadily advanced.
The project leader of China Railway Construction South China Construction introduced that the 5 shield machines launched this time consist of 4 earth pressure balance shield machines and 1 earth pressure/slurry dual-mode shield machine. In response to the geological conditions of the underpass, the shield machine selection was "tailor-made" to improve the construction adaptability of the shield machines.

Connecting to the Shenzhen-Nansha-Zhongshan Intercity Railway, with Nansha directly reaching Shenzhen
The section of the Nansha-Zhuhai (Zhongshan) Intercity Railway currently under construction is the west line (Zhongshan Xingzhong-Guangzhou Wanqingsha). The east line starts from Xiangshan Station in Zhongshan and extends south to Zhuhai. In January, the Zhuhai side stated in a reply on the government service convenience hotline that relevant departments are accelerating the preliminary work for the Xiangshan-Gongbei section of the Nansha-Zhuhai (Zhongshan) Intercity Railway and striving to start construction in 2024.
The Nansha-Zhuhai (Zhongshan) Intercity Railway will operate through-running with Guangzhou Metro Line 18 (Wanqingsha-Guangzhou East Railway Station) and the Guanghua Intercity Railway (Guangzhou East Railway Station-Huacheng Street), and will operate cross-line with the Fangbai Intercity Railway (Fangcun-Baiyun Airport), providing a ride experience like taking the metro. A relevant person in charge of Guangzhou Metro Construction Company introduced that according to the long-term plan, the line can be connected eastward in Nansha to the Shenzhen-Nansha-Zhongshan Intercity Railway (Shenzhen-Nansha-Zhongshan). By then, it will take 50 minutes from Guangzhou urban area to Zhongshan urban area, 60 minutes to Zhuhai urban area, and 75 minutes to Shenzhen urban area.
It is reported that after the completion of the Nansha-Zhuhai (Zhongshan) Intercity Railway, it will promote the deepening of comprehensive cooperation between Nansha District of Guangzhou and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao region oriented toward the world. It is of great significance for promoting the integrated development of the west bank of the Pearl River Estuary in the Greater Bay Area, improving the layout of the intercity railway network in the Greater Bay Area, building a "Greater Bay Area on Rails," and promoting the economic development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the process of regional urban integration.
