Crossing over an operational line above and passing beneath a drainage box culvert... On the 18th, Wuhan Metro Group reported good news: with the cutterhead of the "Jiang'an No. 2" shield machine successfully hoisted out of the shaft, it marked the smooth "breakthrough" of both tunnels in the Jiang'an Road Station–Ziyanghu Station section (referred to herein as the Jiang-Zi section), the first-opened section of Phase III of Line 11.
Li Jianglong, a Level-2 project manager of Wuhan Metro Co., Ltd., introduced that on December 13 last year, the "Jiang'an No. 1" shield machine completed excavation on the right line of the Jiang-Zi section, achieving "breakthrough." The "Jiang'an No. 2" shield machine on the left line of the Jiang-Zi section launched on August 20, 2023, and bored 1,112 meters through water-rich sand strata on the first terrace of the Yangtze River, successively passing beneath Wujindi Highway, closely crossing over an existing line section above, passing beneath the Xunsi River drainage box culvert and the approach bridge of Yingwuzhou Bridge, and finally being successfully received at the receiving shaft of Ziyanghu Station.

It is reported that since the start of construction, the project department has firmly adhered to the management philosophy of safety first and quality paramount, continuously optimizing construction management. In response to the key difficulty of the shield machine closely crossing over an existing line section, the project department established a command center and set up an emergency response linkage mechanism with the metro operating company. During construction, the project department strictly controlled shield tunneling parameters and muck discharge, followed up with simultaneous grouting, adopted ground grouting reinforcement measures, and implemented 24-hour ground monitoring and parameter control to ensure the efficiency and quality of shield tunneling.
The first-opened section of Phase III of Line 11 runs from Wuchang Railway Station to Baishazhou, with a total length of 4 kilometers and a total of 2 stations and 3 sections. To ensure the smooth achievement of milestone targets, throughout the working days after the Spring Festival of the Year of the Dragon, Hu Jing, deputy general manager of Wuhan Metro Co., Ltd., and the owner's representatives of the project department stayed on site to investigate safety hazards in the shield tunneling sections, station decoration, and equipment installation, making full preparations for resuming work. Hu Jing introduced that at present, the main structures of the 2 stations have been completed, and shield tunneling is underway in 2 sections. After the line is completed and opened to traffic, it can effectively alleviate traffic congestion in the Baishazhou area and provide convenience for surrounding residents.
