In actual ball mill production, we find that the impact resistance of oil-film bearings is particularly strong—that is, the rolling force the bearing withstands and its ability to resist deformation of the rolled piece. Under normal circumstances, the rolled piece undergoes rolling only when it enters the biting-in stage, and the load is suddenly generated. By comparison, the roll bearings in the ball mill withstand impact loads, whereas rolling bearings involve rigid contact and have no ability to withstand impact loads, which is why their service cycle is shorter. The oil-film bearings used in ball mills, however, benefit from the oil film inside them, which acts as a certain cushioning effect during operation. The detailed operating principle is as follows: when the roll receives an external impact in the ball mill, the oil between the roll and the bearing is subjected to a strong repelling action. Because the clearance between the roll and the shaft is small and the oil viscosity is high, the oil, when squeezed, generates a reverse resisting force, which gives the bearing a counter-impact capability and thus protects it from damage.
Precisely because oil-film bearings have many advantages in ball mill applications, yet all things considered, achieving the use of oil-film bearings in ball mills requires a considerable capital investment, so we should still carefully weigh whether they are suitable for ball mill production. At the same time, however, we should also increase the utilization rate of rolling bearings, enabling them to reduce wear and be effectively used in mill production.
