Liu Yang: Leaving No Regrets in Youth

People often say that only with dreams can one have the drive to move forward. For Liu Yang, he firmly believes that his dream lies ahead, and he is using his youth to interpret the power of youth.

In 2008, after leaving the university campus, he resolutely chose the hydropower cause he loved. During his five years working at the Sinohydro Bureau 11, he moved from inexperience to maturity, growing from a “hothouse seedling” into a determined and persistent hydropower worker. Five years of time, five years of transformation, could not have happened without the drive of his dreams, his down-to-earth struggle, and his diligence in learning and innovation.

Carrying a Dream, the Transformation of a “Hothouse Seedling”

Liu Yang was the only child in his family, the apple of his parents' eyes, showered with the affection of his parents and other elders. In the past, in the eyes of classmates and friends, he was a thorough “hothouse seedling.” Upon graduation, he chose the hydropower construction industry, but in the eyes of his classmates, Liu Yang's hydropower path would not last long.

When he first arrived at Bureau 11, Liu Yang was assigned to the Chonghur Hydropower Station project in Xinjiang. The climate in the great northwest is quite harsh; the hot dry winds and mosquito bites in summer and the biting cold winds in winter were undoubtedly a great test for both his body and mind.

Faced with such a harsh environment, Liu Yang did not become discouraged or retreat. At first, as an on-site dispatcher, he had to stick to the production frontline every day, coordinating the dispatch of machinery and personnel. In order to do his job well, he took the initiative to learn and asked others whenever he encountered problems he did not understand. In a relatively short period of time, he became familiar with the construction site environment and was able to work independently. All of this was inseparable from his daily practice of asking the civil construction team leaders and master workers for advice and learning from them.

A harsh environment tempers and cultivates a person's character; only after experiencing wind and rain can one see the splendor of the rainbow. The days working on the Xinjiang project left a deep impression on him. In the eyes of his colleagues, the immature childishness gradually faded from him, replaced by a mature temperament of dedication and seriousness toward work.

A “hothouse seedling” that was originally seen by others as such was slowly transforming, spreading its wings, carrying its dream, and welcoming the baptism of sunshine and wind and rain, growing continuously……

Down to Earth, Striving on the Road to Dreams

In February 2009, he came to the Yangjiayuan project department in Guizhou and served as a project technician, mainly responsible for the project's rebar cutting work. For him, this was a severe test. To conveniently record rebar usage, he carefully studied and researched, and used computer software to establish an electronic ledger, compiling statistics on rebar elevation, location, and total quantity control, effectively controlling the project's rebar loss.

Whenever technical problems arose on site, he always handled matters personally. In work such as the dam cooling water pipe temperature control system, induced joint grouting system, and dam abutment contact grouting system, he stuck to the frontline, discussing and working together with the workers. When laying cooling water pipes, he first gave technical briefings to all operating workers, then controlled on site whether the laying of cooling water pipes met design requirements, holding a ruler to measure pipe spacing, telling workers what spacing should be used for laying and at which locations pipe clamps should be installed for fixation. Only after all processes were completed would he leave with peace of mind.

In the preparation of the project construction plan “Prefabrication of T-shaped Formwork at the Corbel Section of the Overflow Dam Section and Integral Rising of Dam Roller-Compacted Concrete,” he volunteered to participate in the plan preparation work, mainly responsible for the reinforcement and rebar drawings of all 452 T-shaped formwork units, the drawing of formwork processing drawings, and the preparation of rebar cutting lists. After the prefabrication work was completed, he uniformly numbered all T-shaped formwork and determined the hoisting sequence to ensure accurate positioning when hoisting began.

On the journey of his career, he held firmly to one simple principle: on the road toward dreams, only by being down to earth can one avoid deviating from direction or stagnating.

Learning and Trying, Giving Wings to Youth

“If one does not work hard in youth, one will grieve in vain in old age.” Liu Yang likes this line of poetry very much. As a project technical staff member, he has his own unique views. Whenever people talk with him about work, his idea is——as a technical staff member, one should not only do technical service work well, but also have a sense of business management.

On the difficult problem of making formwork for the transition section where the circular flow channel of the canal head project powerhouse changes into a rectangular structure, when everyone was at a loss, he used the internet and textbooks to continuously explore deeper applications of 3D software. Eventually, he used CAD software to draw a 3D model of the transition section and produced formwork processing and assembly drawings, which were issued to the work team to guide on-site workers in processing the formwork. This technology not only accelerated construction but also saved costs, achieving two goals at once.

At present, at the canal head project department, he has become an excellent technical backbone of the project and stands at the forefront of many tasks. In July 2012, in the first “New Star of the Post” evaluation for college students held by the sub-bureau, he won the honor of “New Star,” which is precisely the best commendation for his work.

In the eyes of others, Liu Yang is honest and simple, not good at smiling or talking much. Having undergone the transformation from a “hothouse seedling,” he has moved toward maturity. He is determined and persistent, doing every task in a down-to-earth manner, only to realize the hydropower dream in his heart.

The dream lies ahead, youth is flying……
