Long Yue of Liuzhou OVM Company

On December 23, 2010, another piece of good news reached Liugong Group's Liuzhou OVM Company: the project "Steel Strand Full-Bundle Extruded Anchor Cable Stay" won a Chinese invention patent. OVM once again stood at the forefront of the prestressing industry. Long Yue, one of the technical leaders of this project, is deputy general manager and chief engineer of Liugong Group Liuzhou OVM Machinery Co., Ltd., and concurrently director of the National Enterprise Technology Center. He has long been engaged in research on prestressing technology and engineering structures.

At the 2011 Beijing BICES exhibition, the reporter interviewed Long Yue. Although he had already reached the age of "knowing the mandate of Heaven," Long Yue remained elegant and approachable. When he spoke about the technology he had studied and the cause he had pursued, he explained it in an engaging manner, making it easy for people to understand the highly specialized and difficult concept of "prestressing." The reporter also gained a sense of the rapid development pace of Liugong Group's Liuzhou OVM Company, the origins of its industry leadership, and the new opportunities that integration into Liugong has brought to OVM.

Prestressing Means Applying Force in Advance to Offset Loads

Long Yue believes that the prestressing industry holds an indispensable position in modern society. He realized this from the very beginning of entering the industry, or more precisely, he entered the industry after recognizing this point.

"In 1989 I came to Liuzhou Construction Machinery General Factory (the predecessor of OVM), starting as a grassroots technician. At that time, after China's reform and opening up, national infrastructure construction had just begun, and China's prestressing industry was in its early stage of development. I saw great prospects in this industry, so I joined it, and it has been more than 20 years now," Long Yue said.

With more than 20 years of experience in the prestressing industry, Long Yue understands the meaning of prestressing better than others. He said that prestressing means "applying force in advance to offset loads." He used a very intuitive example to explain the meaning of prestressing: "The span of modern bridges has exceeded one kilometer. In the near future, a bridge with a main span of more than 3,000 meters will be built across the Strait of Gibraltar, with no piers in the middle. This is the role and value of prestressing."

He said: "The prestressing industry is an industry where mechanical engineering and civil engineering intersect. Although OVM is also a manufacturing enterprise, in addition to focusing on products, we pay more attention to continuously improving our technology in this field, constantly updating equipment, and continuously perfecting services. We use our advanced technology, equipment, and services to help customers complete their engineering projects. We focus more on the realization of construction projects, which is very different from ordinary manufacturing enterprises."

Technology Is the Cornerstone of OVM's Takeoff

What OVM people are most proud of is this: since the successful research of the OVM post-tensioning prestressing anchorage system in the early 1990s, the company has led the development of China's prestressing technology, and sustained technological development has become the cornerstone of OVM's industry leadership.

As the technical leader of OVM, Long Yue has persistently worked together with industry experts, researchers at the company's research center, and other technical personnel. Through continuous technological innovation, they have promoted the continuous improvement of China's prestressing technology level and also enhanced OVM's industry position. The steel strand cable stay system studied by the technical team led by Long Yue has provided products and specialized construction services for more than 100 cable-stayed bridges around the world.

OVM people have always paid close attention to the safety and durability of bridge structures. Long Yue said: "In recent years, there have been many bridge structure safety problems, and currently there are not many ways to solve this problem in China. As early as 10 years ago, OVM began researching how to improve the safety and durability of bridges at every stage, and established a professional testing company specifically to study new technologies and methods for engineering structure safety monitoring, so as to improve bridge safety and durability from the aspects of technology and maintenance management."
