Construction period: 2008–2013
The tunnel is 28,236 meters long and is currently China's second longest railway tunnel (including those under construction), second only to the under-construction New Guanjiao Tunnel. Located in Wudu District, Longnan City, Gansu Province, it is a double-tube single-track tunnel constructed by China Tunnel Group and China Railway 18th Bureau using two TBMs and the drill-and-blast method. It is a landmark project of the Lanzhou–Chongqing Railway that crosses the Qinling Mountains in western China. The West Qinling Tunnel on the Lanzhou–Chongqing Railway is scheduled to break through in 2013. Using modern tunneling technology to cross complex geology and build long tunnels is a global trend in underground engineering construction and is of milestone significance in the history of railway tunnel construction in China. After the entire Lanzhou–Chongqing Railway is completed and opened to traffic, the railway transport distances from Lanzhou to Chengdu and Chongqing will be shortened from the current 1,172 km and 1,466 km to 836 km and 820 km, respectively.
The West Qinling Tunnel is the longest railway tunnel in China built using the world's most advanced TBM. This modern boring machine, 180 meters long and weighing 1,800 tons, has an excavation diameter of 10.23 meters, making it also the largest-diameter mainline railway tunnel in China built using a TBM.
Taihang Mountains Tunnel — China's Longest Mountain Tunnel
Construction period: June 2005 – 2007
The Taihang Mountains Tunnel is currently China's longest mountain tunnel. It is a double-tube single-track tunnel that passes through Yuexiao Mountain, the main peak of the Taihang Mountains at an elevation of 1,311 meters, with a maximum burial depth of 445 meters and a spacing of 35 meters between the two tubes. The downstream line is 27,839 meters long, and the upstream line is 27,848 meters long. The entire tunnel was completed and opened at the end of 2007. The geological structure of the Taihang Mountains Tunnel is complex, and collapse and large deformation are highly likely. During construction, all parties—construction, design, supervision, and execution—optimized the construction organization and adopted the drill-and-blast method. A total of 11 construction accesses (one entrance, nine inclined shafts, and one exit) and 24 working faces were operated simultaneously. At the same time, scientific and technological research was intensified, a research team was established, and national tunnel experts were organized several times to conduct on-site research on eight key topics, accumulating valuable experience for the construction of extra-long tunnels in China.
The Shijiazhuang–Taiyuan Railway Passenger Dedicated Line is China's first passenger dedicated line to start construction. The main line is 189.93 kilometers long. Construction began on June 11, 2005, and it was completed in 2009. After the Shijiazhuang–Taiyuan Railway Passenger Dedicated Line is completed, in the initial stage of operation, it is expected to send 15 million passengers and 40 million tons of freight annually in one direction.
Wushaoling Tunnel
Construction period: 2003–2006
The Wushaoling Extra-long Tunnel is China's third longest railway tunnel at 20.05 km. It achieved double-track opening on the morning of August 23, 2006. The newly added second line of the Lanzhou–Wuwei section (Lanzhou West to Wuwei South) of the Lanzhou–Xinjiang Railway was fully completed, eliminating the "bottleneck" constraint on the Eurasian Continental Bridge corridor and enabling double-track operation along the entire 3,651 km from Lianyungang to Urumqi. The Wushaoling Tunnel is located between Dachagou Station and Longgou Station on the Lanzhou–Wuwei section of the Lanzhou–Xinjiang Line. It is designed as two single-track tunnels. The exit section of the tunnel is on a curve with a radius of 1,200 m; the right and left transition curves extend into the tunnel for 68.84 m and 127.29 m, respectively. The rest of the tunnel is on a straight line. The armed police are stationed at the Wushaoling Tunnel. The spacing between the two tunnels is 40 m, and both tunnels have the same longitudinal slope, mainly an 11‰ one-way downgrade. The right tunnel is 0.56–0.73 m higher than the left tunnel, and the maximum burial depth of the tunnel body is about 1,100 m. Both the left and right tunnels are constructed by the drill-and-blast method, and the right tunnel was opened first. There are a total of 15 auxiliary adits, including 13 inclined shafts, 1 vertical shaft, and 1 cross adit.
A total of 8 construction units participated in the construction of Wushaoling, namely China Railway First, Second, Fifth, and Tunnel Bureaus, and China Railway Twelfth, Sixteenth, Seventeenth, and Eighteenth Bureaus. All units attached great importance to the construction of the tunnel and invested substantial manpower and material resources. The construction status of this tunnel reflects the real situation of drill-and-blast construction in China today. The "throat" project of the Wushaoling Tunnel—the most difficult F7 fault—was successfully broken through on March 18, 2005.
Jinping Mountain Tunnel — World's Second Deepest Tunnel
Construction period: 2003–2008
The Jinping Mountain Tunnel Project is located on the main stream of the Yalong River at the junction of Muli, Yanyuan, and Mianning Counties in the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, in the middle of the Jinping Great River Bend, one of the three major river bends. It serves as both an extra-long traffic tunnel for the Jinping I, Jinping II, Kara, Yangfanggou, Mengdigou, and other hydropower stations, and an advance exploration adit and construction auxiliary tunnel for the water diversion tunnel of the Jinping II Hydropower Station. At 18:00 on August 8, two parallel single-lane tunnels about 17.5 km long successfully achieved double-tube breakthrough. The 150-km Jinping Great River Bend was cut straight, and two parallel passages were excavated underground. The maximum burial depth of the tunnel is 2,375 meters, with 73% buried more than 1 km underground, making it the deepest tunnel construction in China and the second deepest in the world; it is the world's first case of applying nanoscale materials in water-rich areas and the world's first case of using the discrete element method computer simulation technology for the entire process of tunnel excavation and support.
Lüliang Mountains Tunnel
Construction period: 2006–2009
The Lüliang Mountains Tunnel is a key control project of the Taiyuan–Zhongwei–Yinchuan Railway, with a total length of 20.7 km. It is designed as two single-track tunnels with monolithic track bed. The total project investment is 460 million yuan, and the construction period is 36 months. The Lüliang Mountains Tunnel of the Taiyuan–Zhongwei–Yinchuan Railway crosses the Lüliang Mountains between Fenyang and Lishi. It consists of two single-track one-way slope tunnels, each 20.7 km long. The east entrance of the tunnel is located on the northwest side of Shanglinshe Village, Lijiazhuang, Fenyang City, and the west exit is located at the edge of the Wucheng Reservoir area on the southwest side of Wucheng Town, Lishi District. The Fenyang entrance has an elevation of 1,105 m, and the Lishi exit has an elevation of 1,330 m, with a height difference of 225 m. From east to west, the tunnel climbs continuously at a gradient of 11‰, and the longitudinal line crosses the limestone karst aquifers of the eastern and western flanks of the Lüliang Mountains. Construction of the tunnel started in April 2006 and it was completed in September 2009.
