At 2:30 a.m. on January 17, with the completion of the final pour of concrete, the continuous girder of the Shangheng Bridge in Zhuhai, constructed by China Railway 18th Bureau Group Co., Ltd., was successfully closed, marking a phased achievement in the project's construction. The main works are expected to be completed in June, and the bridge is expected to open to traffic in the second half of this year. Once the new Shangheng Bridge is completed, it will not only facilitate travel for residents of the Lianzhou area of Zhuhai, but will also further improve road network connectivity between Zhuhai and Jiangmen, helping to advance interconnection within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Because safety issues with the original Shangheng Bridge had already had a significant impact on local economic development, the road environment, and residents' normal travel, the bridge was demolished in November 2021 and a new bridge is being rebuilt on the original site.
According to reports, the new bridge has a total length of 1,140 meters and a width of 14 meters. It is designed as a Class II highway, with a two-way, two-lane main line and a design speed of 60 km/h. The main construction contents include temporary works, demolition works, subgrade and pavement works, bridge works, lighting works, traffic facilities and pipeline works, and soft foundation treatment works, among others.
The approach bridge section of the project adopts the construction method of prefabricating the girders first and then erecting them. At present, the piers of the west approach bridge have been completed and precast girders are being erected, while construction of the east approach bridge is planned to begin after the Spring Festival. The bridge is expected to open to traffic in the second half of this year.
