On January 1, President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden exchanged congratulatory letters on the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In his letter, Xi noted that the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States was a major event in the history of bilateral relations and international relations. Over the past 45 years, China-U.S. relations have weathered wind and rain and moved forward generally, which has not only improved the well-being of the two peoples, but also promoted peace, stability and prosperity in the world. History has fully proven and will continue to prove that mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation are the right way for China and the United States, two major countries, to get along with each other, and should become the direction of joint efforts of both sides in the new era.

Xi pointed out that his meeting with President Biden in San Francisco opened up a future-oriented "San Francisco vision" and charted the course for the development of China-U.S. relations. The two sides should earnestly implement the important consensus and outcomes reached by the two heads of state and take practical actions to promote the stable, sound and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations.

Xi stressed that he is willing to work with President Biden to continue to steer and navigate China-U.S. relations, benefit the two countries and the two peoples, and promote the cause of world peace and development.

In his letter, Biden said that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1979, the ties between the United States and China have promoted prosperity and opportunity for the United States, China and the world. I am committed to responsibly managing this important relationship. I look forward to continuing to advance the U.S.-China relationship on the basis of the progress made by our predecessors and our many meetings and discussions.
