In the early hours of October 15, with the completion of concrete pouring for the final closure segment of the continuous girder of the Guangxi Liujiang Double-Track Grand Bridge, the continuous girder of the Liujiang Double-Track Grand Bridge was successfully closed, achieving north-south through-connectivity. At this point, the Liuzhou Railway Hub Capacity Expansion and Renovation Project has entered the sprint phase, taking a solid step toward the goal of opening by the end of this year.
The Liuzhou Railway Hub is the intersection of five major trunk lines: the Hunan-Guangxi Railway, the Guizhou-Guangxi Railway, the Jiaozuo-Liuzhou Railway, the Hengyang-Liuzhou Railway, and the Liuzhou-Nanning Passenger Dedicated Line. It is an important railway hub connecting the southwestern and central-southern regions with the coastal areas of South China, and plays an important strategic role in the economic development of the entire region. However, because the hub's northbound section is a mixed passenger-freight double-track line and high-speed and conventional railways share the same line, safety pressure is high, making it a transport bottleneck for Guangxi railways heading north.
To break through the bottleneck, the China Railway Nanning Group launched a capacity expansion and renovation of the hub in November 2021, listing it as a key railway construction project in Guangxi. The Liujiang Double-Track Grand Bridge has a total length of 1,688 meters and crosses the Liujiang River, the Guizhou-Guangxi Railway, and Liutai Road. It is adjacent to the existing Liujiang Grand Bridge and the Liujiang Honghua Water Conservancy Hub Reservoir Project. The hydrological conditions are complex, and construction is difficult during the flood season, making it a controlling project for the entire Liuzhou Hub of the Hunan-Guangxi Railway.
The project starts at Zhegujiang Station, passes through Qingmao Station, and ends at Liuzhou West Station, with a total length of about 20.4 kilometers. It mainly includes the addition of a second track to the existing single-track railway from Zhegujiang Station to Qingmao Station, as well as the addition of third and fourth tracks from Qingmao Station to Liuzhou West Station. After completion, the hub's northbound line will change from a mixed passenger-freight double-track line to a four-track line with separate passenger and freight operations, increasing transport capacity by three times. This is of great significance for improving the layout of the railway network in the southwestern region and optimizing the operating conditions for passenger and freight trains.
