The construction survey for the T3 Terminal area of the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Phase III Expansion Project, undertaken by the large state-owned enterprise MCC Group Wuhan Survey Research Institute Co., Ltd. (referred to as "MCC Wuhan Survey"), is now over halfway complete, with the project site bustling with activity.

It is reported that Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is one of China's three major composite gateway hub airports and ranked first in the world in airport passenger volume in 2020. The Baiyun Airport Phase III Expansion Project, now under construction, will realize a planning layout of five runways and two terminal areas. The main construction includes the West No. 2 Runway, East No. 3 Runway, the East No. 4 and West No. 4 concourses of T2 Terminal, as well as the new T3 Terminal and a comprehensive transportation center, introducing rail transit lines such as metro, intercity railways, and high-speed railways.

As the largest expansion and renovation project in the history of China's civil aviation airport construction, this expansion is of great significance for strengthening Guangzhou's international aviation hub, creating a new source of momentum for the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and promoting the realization of the strategic goal of building a strong civil aviation nation. After the project is completed, Baiyun Airport's aircraft takeoff and landing capacity, annual passenger throughput capacity, and cargo and mail throughput capacity will all be substantially improved.

As the "centerpiece" of this construction, the Baiyun Airport T3 Terminal is H-shaped, with a building area of approximately 422,000 square meters, consisting of multiple areas including Main Building Sections A and B and the northeast and northwest concourses. Due to the dispersed site, large stratigraphic differences, and numerous boreholes, no rock is encountered within 100 meters in deep-hole areas, karst caves are developed in some zones, sand layers are relatively thick, and tube wave detection is difficult to complete.

To this end, MCC Wuhan Survey has fully leveraged its comprehensive advantages in the high-end survey field to ensure the normal construction of hundreds of machines on site, and, based on the on-site stratigraphic characteristics, promptly drilled supplementary holes in deep-hole areas where tube wave detection could not be performed, ensuring that the survey data is authentic and reliable. After the outdoor survey operations were completed, the MCC Wuhan Survey project department also seamlessly carried out indoor work, organizing, calculating, and verifying the data recorded on site each day and delivering survey results in a timely manner, which played an important role in ensuring the efficient subsequent progress of the project.
Up to now, nearly 3,000 boreholes have been completed for the Baiyun Airport T3 Terminal, with drilling work exceeding 160,000 meters and more than 2,000 tube wave detections. The overall project progress has exceeded 50%, and exploration work in the comprehensive transportation center area has been fully launched.
