The latest progress on the much-watched CRS Sunward No. 13 shield machine is here!

On August 29, in the Changsha Wanjiali North Extension Power Tunnel—the first shield-method tunnel undertaken by CRS Sunward—the first shield machine, CRS Sunward No. 13, successfully completed its breakthrough.

The Changsha Wanjiali Road rapid-renovation north extension power tunnel is a provincial and municipal key power project serving Metro Line 3, Metro Line 5 and the Chang-Zhu-Tan intercity railway. It adopts the shield construction method, with a total length of 5 km and an inner diameter of 3.6 m. The first shield-driven section that broke through is 1,978 meters long.

Over 325 days, the CRS Sunward No. 13 shield machine was split four times, launched three times, received three times, and passed through shafts twice. It crossed beneath Metro Line 5 and the Laodao River, with the river-crossing section reaching 200 m and the closest distance to the riverbed scour layer only 2.1 meters. Having weathered numerous challenges, the No. 13 shield machine successfully completed CRS Sunward's first shield-method construction project since entering the tunnel construction field.

September 22, 2020

The cutterhead of the CRS Sunward No. 13 shield machine began to rotate slowly and was successfully launched in the Wanjiali North Extension Power Tunnel project.

February 1, 2021

After its cutterhead cut through the retaining structure piles, the CRS Sunward No. 13 shield machine successfully broke through the first tunnel section of the Wanjiali North Extension Power Tunnel project.

August 29, 2021

The first shield machine of the Wanjiali North Extension Power Tunnel project broke through. It is reported that the other two shield machines on the Wanjiali project are also about to complete their breakthroughs.
