On July 5, a reporter learned from the Sichuan Provincial Department of Water Resources that on the 6th, the Pihe Water Supply Project, a major water conservancy project awaited by residents of the drought-prone central Sichuan region for half a century, will begin water delivery. With this, nearly 5 million people will finally realize the Pihe dream.
The Pihe Water Supply Project is a large-scale backbone project in the strategic water resource allocation system of "five horizontal and six vertical" lines in the central economic zone of Sichuan Province. It is a key backbone project of Sichuan Province's major water conservancy upgrade initiative to "build another Dujiangyan" and is an important part of the Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project. The water supply area is located in the hilly region on both sides of the watershed between the Fujiang and Tuojiang rivers in the central Sichuan Basin, involving Chengdu, Ziyang, and Suining. The designed irrigation area is 4.17 million mu, and the water supply population is 4.89 million.
The Pihe Water Supply Project is implemented in two phases. The first phase has the task of comprehensive utilization for urban and rural domestic and industrial water supply and agricultural irrigation, with a designed irrigation area of 1.5506 million mu, a water supply population of 2.3 million, and an average annual water diversion volume of 433 million cubic meters. The water intake hub of the Pihe Water Supply Project is located at Goujiatan in Xindu District, Chengdu, on the middle reaches of the Pihe River. The main canal runs from west to east across the Chengdu Plain, through the Longquan Mountains, across the Tuojiang River, and along the Tuojiang-Fujiang watershed to Chaoyang Reservoir in Anyue County, Ziyang. Construction began in 2015 and lasted six years, completing the Goujiatan water intake hub and 20 backbone water conveyance channels totaling 381 kilometers, including 156 kilometers of the main canal. After the project begins water delivery, it will completely solve the water use and drinking water difficulties of 4.89 million people in the drought-prone areas of 7 counties (cities and districts) in Chengdu, Ziyang, and Suining.
By the end of 2025, more than 45% of Guangzhou's urban built-up area will meet sponge city construction requirements
