On the afternoon of June 13, CCTV's News Channel program "News Live Room" aired a special report titled "Live Up to Youth, Live Up to the Nation — Technological Innovation, Serving the Country Through Equipment." Running 5 minutes and 38 seconds, the report featured Sunward's many young scientists and engineers who keep in mind General Secretary Xi Jinping's instructions, live up to their youth on the path of innovation, shoulder heavy responsibilities, overcome difficulties, and firmly grasp key core technologies in their own hands. Ahead of the Dragon Boat Festival, CCTV's high-profile report is both an affirmation of Sunward's many young scientists and engineers and the best holiday gift they could receive before the festival.

The Chinese nation is a nation that dares to innovate and create. Pursuing truth and striving through hard work are our cultural genes, and loving our country and people is our spiritual heritage. For thousands of years, devotion to home and country has been passed down from generation to generation, and cultural inheritance has continued without end. Especially over the past century, on the road to national rejuvenation, we have created achievements worthy of our times for our country and the world.

Forging ahead on a new journey, the struggle of youth never stops. Today, a large number of young researchers in the equipment manufacturing field are overcoming difficulties in their respective posts, constantly breaking through their own limits, and gradually achieving independent innovation in key core technologies.

Ahead of the Dragon Boat Festival, in Hunan, China's first all-composite light sport aircraft with fully independent intellectual property rights was undergoing technical upgrades and performance test flights. During the process, it suddenly encountered strong vertical air currents, causing the aircraft to descend rapidly.

Zhou Zhidong, engineer at the Sunward Aviation Research Institute: When this aircraft was first designed, we went through many rounds of test flights and optimized the aircraft's handling characteristics to the extreme. The aircraft has more than 3,000 parts in total and nearly 1,400 drawings, all of which we drew ourselves.

The all-composite light sport aircraft belongs to general aviation equipment and is mainly used for emergency rescue, pilot training, and other tasks. During the pandemic last year, it completed multiple aerial transfer missions for anti-epidemic supplies. Behind this is an R&D team composed mainly of young researchers. Since 2002, for nearly 20 years, they have started from nothing and devoted themselves to independent research, development, and design.

Zhu Zhenxin, engineer at the Sunward Foundation Equipment Research Institute: At the world's largest construction machinery exhibition, I went to the booth of an advanced foreign manufacturer to learn. A staff member saw us taking photos, walked over, and said one sentence to us: "Chinese copy everything." That sentence struck me deeply at the time. He was not actually worried that we would imitate them, but that we would surpass them. So a dream was planted in my heart: to serve the country through equipment.

However, the young researchers know well that the path of independent innovation cannot be smooth sailing. In a project competing with a foreign brand, the equipment developed by Zhu Zhenxin's team initially lagged relatively in performance. Yet none of the young researchers gave up easily.

Zhu Zhenxin, engineer at the Sunward Foundation Equipment Research Institute: In the heat of July, we tested for a full week at our (outdoor) test site, repeatedly calculating and experimenting. Then we obtained a set of relatively optimal data. After debugging and optimizing the on-site equipment, our efficiency immediately improved considerably.

Zhu Zhenxin also clearly remembers how he and his team members felt when a fully hydraulic crawler pile driver they had developed was exported abroad.

Zhu Zhenxin, engineer at the Sunward Foundation Equipment Research Institute: When this equipment was assembled (abroad), that sense of achievement, especially national pride, welled up in me. I believe that we young people in manufacturing have great prospects. Because this era has given us opportunities.

Today, in the equipment manufacturing field, many of China's innovative technology applications are already at the forefront of the industry. At the test site, a test of an intelligent aerial work platform fleet and an intelligent rotary drilling rig is underway. It can not only achieve one-to-many synchronous operation control and full-angle video monitoring of equipment, but also enable remote control operation via the 5G network.

He Songquan, engineer at the Sunward Common Technology Research Institute: This is our industry's first 5G intelligent rotary drilling rig. I am now in Changsha, Hunan Province, while our equipment, the rotary drilling rig, is in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. (It) can achieve remote construction across thousands of miles.
At the same time, at the flight test site, with the success of the 26th test flight, China's first 700-kilogram-class all-composite light sport aircraft with fully independent intellectual property rights is about to roll off the production line.

Zhou Zhidong, engineer at the Sunward Aviation Research Institute: Hunan Province this year is also the first province in China to pilot (full-area) low-altitude reform. I think our research team is like the aircraft we developed: although we may encounter turbulence, as long as we keep striving upward, we will eventually break through the clouds.
