As an important transportation hub for entering the island via the future Xiang'an Bridge and a key transportation supporting enhancement project for the Xiamen Eastern Sports and Exhibition New City, the Binhai East Avenue (Xiang'an South Road–Xiang'an Tunnel Section) reconstruction project has drawn much public attention. Recently, construction of Sections A and B of the Binhai East Avenue (Xiang'an South Road–Xiang'an Tunnel Section) reconstruction project has advanced in parallel, and the project is expected to be completed next June.

The Binhai East Avenue (Xiang'an South Road–Xiang'an Tunnel Section) reconstruction project starts near the interchange of the Second East Channel currently under construction and ends east of the top of the Xiang'an Tunnel, with a total length of about 2.904 km.

Viewed from above, the construction site of the Binhai East Avenue (Xiang'an South Road–Xiang'an Tunnel Section) reconstruction project is bustling, with more than 400 construction workers carrying out work in an orderly manner and various large machines and engineering vehicles operating intensively. It is understood that since construction began at the end of September 2020, the project has completed traffic diversion access roads, retaining piles for the main line foundation pit, high-pressure jet grouting piles, concrete crown beams and supports, and has also completed excavation of one section of the foundation pit. The main tunnel structure is currently under construction.

For Section A of the project, after all retaining piles for the main line tunnel were completed, a total of 1,485 piles had been completed; crown beams totaled 1,300 meters, accounting for 77% of the total; retaining piles for the Planning Road No. 2 project totaled 170, accounting for 77% of the total; and column piles totaled 24, accounting for 82% of the total. For Section B, retaining piles totaled 1,091, accounting for 92% of the total of 1,180; high-pressure jet grouting piles totaled 1,090, accounting for 92% of the total of 1,180.

It is worth noting that after reconstruction, the main line of Binhai East Avenue will be an undercrossing tunnel with a total length of 2,040 m, two-way 6 lanes, and a design speed of 80 km/h. It is positioned as an urban expressway, arranged in two tubes, with a single-tube clearance net width of 13.5 m and a net height of 5 m. The surface road will be an urban arterial road with a standard red line width of 55 m, two-way 8 lanes, and a design speed of 50 km/h. After the reconstruction is completed, it will effectively ease traffic pressure on Binhai East Avenue.
