据了解，新华山隧道全长5931米，位于张家界、花垣与古丈三大断裂带交会处，跨越8个大断层，地质极为复杂。新华山隧道进口裂隙水尤为丰富，为松散堆积体，被铁路工程专家称为当今世界最难打的隧道之一。
新华山隧道岩层多炭质页岩，平均每月进度还不到8米，施工进度一度成为张吉怀铁路建设的拦路虎。去年以来，中铁十二局集团举全局之力，集中最强的施工队伍和最先进的设备，调集近2亿元资金，派出最富有隧道施工经验的专家上阵，以攻城不畏难的精神和顽强的意志，按节点目标提前12天将新华山隧道贯通，为全线铺轨奠定了基础。
