At around 9 a.m. on the 5th, we arrived at the collapsed slope of the Zhongzhou Canal on Huancheng North Road. At the scene, we noted that one side of the Zhongzhou Canal is adjacent to Huancheng North Road, and the other side is close to the residential community at No. 7 Yucai Street. On the side near the residential buildings, the slope protection of the Zhongzhou Canal had suffered a severe collapse. The entire guardrail and the cement on the slope had fallen onto the riverbed below the Zhongzhou Canal, exposing a large area of yellow soil. A warning line had been set up around the collapsed section. According to a rough calculation, the entire collapsed section is about 20 meters long.

After making a detour from the nearby bridge to the collapsed slope, we found that the sections on both sides of the collapse also showed subsidence, with large cracks present, making it feel very unsafe to walk there. We also noted that apart from a layer of cement and rebar about four to five centimeters thick, the rest of the slope is all loess.

Not far from the site, there are four households, but no one answered after knocking several times. According to nearby residents, the small path on the slope is the only way for these four households to get in and out. "Now that a section of the slope has collapsed, their travel has become very unsafe."

"It probably collapsed on the morning of the 5th. There were quite a few cracks on the slope here, so it's not surprising that it collapsed." said Aunt Wang, a resident. The residential community at No. 7 Yucai Street has more than 150 households, with many children and elderly people. "There are quite a few children here who usually play nearby. It's very dangerous," said Aunt Wang.

  Response:

Apply to the Water Affairs Bureau for project approval and carry out emergency repairs as soon as possible

So what measures have the relevant departments taken after the collapse of the Zhongzhou Canal slope on Huancheng North Road? At around 4 p.m. on the 5th, we contacted Director Zhang of the River and Canal Management Office. He said that after learning of the collapse that morning, the River and Canal Management Office immediately rushed to the site. "After we arrived, we first set up a warning line and told nearby residents not to approach the area," said Director Zhang.

Director Zhang said the cause of the slope collapse may be that the recent flood season has brought a lot of rain, which softened part of the slope. Over time, the slope could no longer bear its proper weight, ultimately leading to the collapse.

"We have already reported it to the Water Affairs Bureau and will immediately apply for project approval and carry out emergency repairs as soon as possible," said Director Zhang. Because the cracks in the nearby slope are relatively large and another collapse could occur at any time, the repair work will involve demolishing the area near the collapsed section as well, and then having technical personnel redesign and reinforce it.

At the same time, Director Zhang also said that since the collapse had just occurred that day, only the preliminary preventive measure of setting up a warning line had been taken. "This is only preliminary and serves as a warning. Next, we will continue to take measures to ensure the daily travel safety of nearby residents."
