The superstructures and hangars of Zumwalt and Monsoor use composite materials to reduce hull weight, while the hulls use ordinary steel materials. The two ships are being built by Bath Iron Works, while the composite superstructures are being built by Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII).
The US Navy negotiated with Huntington Ingalls Industries over the composite superstructure for DDG 1002, but was dissatisfied with the price quoted by the shipyard, and subsequently expressed its intention to adopt a steel structure. Negotiations on the composite structure remain on hold, and Huntington Ingalls Industries has also refused to bid for the steel superstructure.
The steel superstructure of DDG 1002 has only minor changes compared with the composite superstructures used on DDG 1000/1001. The design will only be slightly adjusted according to the change in materials, and the technical baseline will follow the design of DDG 1001.
Zumwalt is 84% complete and is scheduled to be launched in the second half of 2013. The ship was originally planned for delivery in 2014, but full service is estimated to be in 2016. Monsoor is 64% complete and is scheduled for delivery in 2016.
The DDG 1000-class destroyer program includes four major contract manufacturers. Among them, Bath Iron Works is responsible for design, construction, integration, testing and delivery. Huntington Ingalls Industries is responsible for building the composite superstructures and aft peripheral vertical launch systems for DDG 1000 and DDG 1001. Raytheon is responsible for developing the combat system, part of the communications system, all onboard computing and software development, and mission system integration; BAE Systems will provide the Advanced Gun System and the Long Range Land Attack Projectile.
