A railway cuts through the mountains of northern Guangxi — this is the Guiyang–Guangzhou high-speed railway, China's longest mountain high-speed railway currently under construction.

　　The civil works Section 5 undertaken by CCCC Second Highway Engineering Co., Ltd. lies within the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, passing through Sanjiang County of Liuzhou City and Longsheng County and Lingui County of Guilin City, with a total line length of 62.65 kilometers and a total investment of 4.316 billion yuan. The project consists mainly of tunnel works, with 34 tunnels totaling 48.66 kilometers, accounting for 77.7% of the total line length. It is characterized by a long line and wide area, scattered work sites, a large management span, and poor construction conditions.

　　On this glorious front, we cannot depict and record every one of those dear and lovable builders one by one; instead, we focus our eyes on a group of young "young commanders" who harbor dreams. 　　Someone once evaluated the "post-80s" generation this way: they are a generation that bears the risk and pressure of making a living and finding employment in the tide of the market, with a strong sense of self, focusing on their own subjective feelings, and in the contest between ideals and reality, reality triumphs over ideals.

　　Qu Ke, born in May 1981, is not tall, with dark skin — a typical "post-80s." From project office clerk to work-zone technical supervisor, from Safety and Quality Department head to safety director, he has cherished every work opportunity, earnestly and diligently doing his job well. After arriving at the Guiyang–Guangzhou railway project, he volunteered to be tempered at the front-line construction workface. Every day he goes to the site early to manage the work-crew operations, responsible for dispatch, coordination, technology, and safety; sometimes he does not return from the site until after mealtime, yet he has never backed down.

　　In view of the actual situation of many scattered points along a long line and uneven quality among the workers, he personally brings safety technical briefings to each work crew to explain safety operation precautions, reminds and informs them of possible safety risk factors, moving people with words and with feeling, and has every worker sign the safety technical briefing, so that safety education leaves no one out. After several consecutive days, his skin got tanned, but he never complained of hardship; when he returns at night he cannot even spare time to rest, promptly completing the day's office documentation and sorting out the "closed-loop" ledgers for safety inspection and rectification at all levels. At work, he often spends entire days immersed in the construction site, solving one construction problem after another, and also goes to the explosives magazine to check whether the storage of explosives and pyrotechnic articles has been affected by moisture and whether the video surveillance is working normally, then reminds the warehouse keeper on duty to do a good job of registering in and out of storage, and never to make any mistake. His girlfriend far away in Xi'an has repeatedly urged him to come back for a get-together, but he could not find the time and kept putting it off, so much so that his girlfriend protested, "From now on, just go date the tunnel."

　　"Only by striving can one win; interpret youth with striving." Qu Ke chose the cause of road building; fearless responsibility has forged the true character of a road-and-bridge builder, and he has uncomplainingly poured his youth and passion, glory and dreams into the journey of struggle.
