2020年6月30日，位于云南省大理白族自治州巍山县境内的大（理）临（沧）铁路最长隧道——林保山隧道顺利贯通。林保山隧道全长14.076公里，属高风险隧道，是全线第一长隧和重点控制性工程，涵盖岩溶、有害气体、断层破碎带、高地应力、高地温等不良地质，施工条件艰苦，施工难度极大。
大临铁路全长约202公里，北起大理站，跨越澜沧江、穿越无量山脉后到达临沧市，设计时速160公里，桥隧占全线总长87.25％，为国家Ⅰ级客货共线电气化铁路。大临铁路建成通车后将结束云南临沧不通铁路的历史，能极大地改善滇中和滇西区域综合交通。
