Xi'an Installs Smart Locks on Excavators: Overloaded Muck Trucks Can Have Fuel Cut Off

At the urban village redevelopment construction site in Houcun, Yanta District, an excavator loading construction waste onto a muck truck suddenly stalled, and the driver could not restart it no matter what he tried—because it had been "locked" by the GPS smart lock installed on its body.

The GPS smart lock draws on the GPS anti-theft systems of luxury cars. By installing a GPS wireless smart lock on the excavator's fuel line, once staff spot a violation—loading a truck above the allowed height—on the monitoring platform during actual operations, they can activate the smart self-lock to shut it down.

At the Xi'an on-site meeting on remote monitoring and management of the source of construction waste removal held on August 23, Yanta District introduced its early pilot experience. Currently, excavators at all 20 earth-excavation sites in the district are equipped with the GPS smart lock system. "From several cases discovered every day before to only a few cases a month now," said Wang Junchao, director of the Yanta District Urban Appearance and Landscaping Bureau.

It is understood that a set of GPS wireless smart locks plus service fees costs less than 2,000 yuan, and the device can be reused: after use on an excavator at one earth-excavation site, it can be removed and installed on an excavator at another site. Zhang Wei, director of the Xi'an Muck Removal Rectification Office, said that this measure will be promoted at construction sites across the city in the future. Installing GPS wireless smart locks will not increase the burden on removal vehicles; all required costs will be borne by the relevant government departments.
