On the afternoon of July 19, at the northern end of Jinxing Avenue in Wangcheng District, Changsha, two excavators and one bulldozer were working intensively. The excavators were spreading crushed stone on the dirt road, sending dust into the air.

At first glance, this looks like nothing more than an ordinary construction scene. In reality, however, it is the “opening act” of a landmark mega-project that has attracted worldwide attention——once completed, its main tower will rise to 838 meters, 10 meters taller than the current world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.

According to the reporter, the project is called “Sky City.” It consists of above-ground and underground sections: the underground portion uses a steel-reinforced concrete structure, while the above-ground portion is entirely steel structure, with a total floor area of 1.2 million square meters. The project comprises a 220-story main tower with a total height of 838 meters and a floor area of 1.05 million square meters; four attached buildings of 3 to 7 stories, 23 meters tall and with a total floor area of 35,000 square meters; and a four-story basement with a floor area of 130,000 square meters. It is a fully functional vertical city where more than 30,000 people can work and live.

On June 5, 2012, this “world's tallest building” officially settled in Changsha. However, due to various reasons, it was not until the evening of July 18, 2013, when China Construction Fifth Engineering Division and Changsha Broad Group signed the general construction contracting agreement, that the “world's tallest building” finally showed signs of breaking ground.

The reporter noted that the total general contracting price for the project is 5.25 billion yuan. Construction of the six underground floors will take six months, while the above-ground buildings will be assembled using Broad Sustainable Building's modular materials, which is expected to take another six or seven months. Overall completion is therefore estimated for next summer.

Today, earthmoving machinery such as excavators and bulldozers has already moved onto the construction site first, kicking off large-scale construction, and in the future more earthmoving machinery, concrete machinery, lifting equipment and other machines will inevitably follow.

Keeping the appointment with the “world's tallest building”——construction machinery is hard at work!
