With the successful lifting of the 6-meter shield machine out of the shaft at Dongfengbeiqiao Station, the right-line tunnel between Zaoying Station and Dongfengbeiqiao Station on Subway Line 14 has been completed, marking the first time in the city's subway construction history that a tunnel beneath a lake has been holed through without interrupting the water flow.

The reporter learned yesterday from the Fourth Company of Beijing Municipal Road and Bridge Municipal Group that the lake-crossing section of Line 14 starts from Zaoying Station and drives underground toward the stations to the north and south. The section from Zaoying Station north to Dongfengbeiqiao Station must cross the North Lake of Chaoyang Park, with a crossing length of 592 meters; the section from Zaoying Station south to Chaoyang Park Station must cross the South Lake of Chaoyang Park, with a crossing length of 587 meters. Because subway construction requires excavating two tunnels for trains in both directions, each direction is crossed successively by two shield machines, for a total of four crossings.

The completion of the right-line tunnel currently marks the first northbound crossing. The shield machine on the left line has successfully crossed beneath the North Lake of Chaoyang Park and will begin crossing the South Lake of Chaoyang Park next month. It is understood that the eastern section of Line 14, including the lake-crossing section, will open to traffic at the end of 2014.
