Xu Wei

　　He is young and promising, technically skilled, capable in management, and bold in thought and action; he is talented, equally adept at both the pen and the sword, a fine cook with a resounding singing voice; he unites the masses, is ideologically progressive, loves the Party, and is willing to dedicate himself. He is Xu Wei, chief engineer of the Feixing Boda Project Department of the Second Company of Xinxing Construction General Contracting. From joining the workforce in August 2003 to serving as chief engineer, Xu Wei has made indelible contributions to his project department.

　Facing Difficulties with Composure

　　Phase I of the affordable housing project for Unit 66055 of the Chinese People's Liberation Army was beset with difficulties from the very start due to various factors, but project chief engineer Xu Wei shouldered the burden alone. The early-stage foundation excavation, foundation cushion, waterproofing, protective layer, and other construction items of this project had all been completed by the previous construction unit a year earlier. When the team entered the site, it was overgrown with weeds; the completed portions of the work had been soaked and scoured by summer rains and severely damaged by the bitter cold and wind and snow of winter, and water seepage had appeared in many parts of the foundation. In response to these problems, Xu Wei led an advance team onto the site to carry out cleanup, while leading the technical team in a preliminary analysis of site conditions and detailed discussions on the seepage issue, and put forward feasible recommendations to the client. Through the joint efforts of the project department and the client, the on-site problems were satisfactorily resolved, and a smooth handover with the previous construction team was achieved, winning the first battle of the project.

　　After the project was taken over, formal construction also encountered repeated setbacks. Chief engineer Xu Wei set about organizing on-site construction, and all work was about to be fully rolled out, with everyone in high spirits. However, due to internal reasons at the client, a single word—"stop work"—completely disrupted the original plan. Repeated inquiries yielded no clear reply, and the site, which should have been bustling, suddenly returned to the quiet of the holiday period.

　　As time went on, the workers' discontent grew day by day. At this point, Xu Wei, as the person chiefly responsible for the project, was under great pressure: he not only had to find ways to soothe the workers' emotions but also had to communicate and coordinate with the client. The daily strain added a few more grey hairs to Xu Wei, then in his thirties. Through many efforts, construction across all trades was finally carried out smoothly, and when work resumed the site did not suffer a massive loss of labor. However, the loss of nearly a month of schedule became the biggest problem at the time. Rather than simply pressing the client for schedule compensation, Xu Wei devoted all his attention to optimizing construction management, determined to make up the loss through on-site construction, racing against time and striving for speed. In the end, through hard work, solid effort, and clever methods, the construction plan proceeded smoothly and the schedule pressure was eased.

　　Facing Work with Meticulous Care

　　During construction, Xu Wei, who also served as deputy production manager, adjusted labor in a timely and appropriate manner according to circumstances, refined construction deployment, clarified work plans, and led by example, leading management personnel to stay on site regularly. Through everyone's joint efforts, construction proceeded in a compact and orderly manner. Before the "Structural Great Wall Cup" evaluation, he even left his wife, who was about to give birth, and stayed day and night at the construction front line. To ensure project quality, Xu Wei put forward the slogan "Give more, seek efficiency, refine every detail, and create a gold-cup project." When directing formwork construction on site, in view of the many re-entrant corner walls, he strictly required the use of "I"-shaped top formwork braces and the reinforcement of corner forms, ensuring that joints between wall forms and corner forms, and between wall forms and wall forms, were tight with no misalignment. Drawing on his rich construction experience and in view of the characteristics of the stairwells in this project, Xu Wei designed a support system for stairwell wall formwork, adding sealing strips at the edges so that the stairwell wall surfaces had no misalignment at the joints and no grout leakage. Upon acceptance by the "Structural Great Wall Cup" experts, the work received favorable reviews and won the praise of company leaders.

　　Facing Life as a Role Model

　　He knows how to work, and even more how to live. In daily life, Xu Wei's mastery of both the pen and the sword is the envy of all. On New Year's Eve, he volunteered to stay on duty at the Shunyi construction site, celebrating with everyone and showing off his cooking skills, so that colleagues far from home felt the warmth of family. He keeps pace with the times ideologically and arms his mind with advanced ideas, always keeping firmly in mind the fundamental purpose of serving the people wholeheartedly, always playing the vanguard and exemplary role of leading by example in his work, and in the process constantly improving his ideological and moral cultivation. As the saying goes, where there is giving, there is return. Comrade Xu Wei's patient dedication also brought him the reward he deserved—in July 2011, Comrade Xu Wei gloriously joined the Communist Party of China.
