Without conventional building materials such as cement and sand-gravel, a sturdy and durable pipe culvert can be assembled in a short time; without deep excavation and base paving, pipelines can be laid quickly.

Recently, the largest metal corrugated pipe culvert in the history of Jiangxi expressway construction was applied and implemented at 14K+220m of Section A3 of the Wanyi Expressway.

This construction technique is not affected by the external environment, allowing earthwork construction and pipe culvert installation to be carried out simultaneously. The two “coexist harmoniously” without interfering with each other, which not only accelerates the construction progress and shortens the construction period, but also saves costs and helps control quality.

It is understood that because 14K+220m of Section A3 of the Wanyi Expressway is located in a transverse half-fill half-cut section, and the foundation bearing capacity on the left and right sides of the subgrade differs greatly with uneven stress, it is prone to uneven settlement that causes traditional concrete culverts to crack. At the same time, local villagers requested that this passage be opened as soon as possible to facilitate daily production and life. In view of the above special circumstances, the Wanyi Project Office and the designer conducted careful on-site verification and made reasonable changes, deciding to abandon the traditional concrete pipe culvert for this section and use metal corrugated pipe culvert as the passage construction material.

The corrugated pipe culvert has a diameter of 6 meters and a length of 50 meters. It is assembled from multiple corrugated plates bolted together. Its structural stress condition is reasonable, the load distribution is uniform, and it has a certain ability to resist deformation. Through measures such as construction setting-out, site leveling, foundation cushion filling, pipe body installation, sealant sealing, asphalt coating, and culvert backfilling, the metal corrugated pipe passage facility is currently stable. Its construction speed was more than one month faster than that of a concrete slab culvert, effectively solving the problem that traditional concrete pipe culvert construction in high-fill sections takes a long time and affects the progress of subgrade filling.
