"The pace of development of Chinese enterprises has exceeded my imagination." For Harvard student Douglas Muhlestein, everything he saw in China was new, including SANY Group, the company where he interned; its long-boom concrete pump trucks, asphalt pavers, reach stackers and other products all became "new gadgets" in his eyes.
Douglas Muhlestein is one of the Harvard students who came to intern at SANY Group this year. It is understood that in addition to Harvard University, teachers and students from MIT in the United States and several top universities in France, Hong Kong and Taiwan have all interned or visited SANY for exchanges. SANY is the first enterprise in Hunan to attract Harvard students for internships, and the only enterprise in China's construction machinery industry to receive attention from many of the world's top universities.
SANY in the eyes of Harvard students: innovative and interesting
According to Douglas Muhlestein, although Harvard University is a top institution in the world, it is not easy to get a summer internship opportunity abroad. "After all, there are only so many opportunities, and everyone wants to go out and broaden their horizons."
Douglas Muhlestein, 23, is from Los Angeles and speaks Chinese very fluently. He told reporters that after this summer he will be a junior, and he feels very lucky to be able to intern at SANY Group in China, because almost all the learning content is brand new and challenging, and he likes this kind of challenge. More than 30 classmates came to China for internships with him, distributed in Changsha, Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and other places; their internship period this time is two months.
Douglas Muhlestein, who studies computer science and applied mathematics at Harvard University, said this is his first time in mainland China; three years ago, he did volunteer work in Taiwan, China.
"The volunteer experience is still different from interning at a large enterprise." His internship in SANY's IT department made Douglas Muhlestein understand that work requires more attention to efficiency and methods. In just two weeks, he was already able to use SAP software proficiently.
Anna Zhong, who came to intern at SANY with him, chose to intern at SANY's pumping international marketing company. When the reporter saw her, she was conducting a contract review under the guidance of her mentor Chen Tao. She still found the Chinese version of the contract somewhat difficult to understand.
As a responsible enterprise, SANY Group had arranged on-the-job mentors for the interns before they arrived. These mentors are all senior employees of their departments and can provide better guidance for the interns' work and life.
Anna Zhong said SANY Group gave her the impression of being "interesting." Not only did employees in many departments take the initiative to help her understand work-related content, but she also saw many high school students participating in social practice at the company, which made her feel that SANY Group is "very caring."
In addition to daily communication with their mentors and SANY employees, SANY's pumping human resources department also prepared a variety of activities for these Harvard students. This weekend they will go to Zhangjiajie, which excites them greatly, as it was one of the filming locations for the American blockbuster "Avatar." Before that, they also visited Yuelu Mountain, Shaoshan and other scenic spots to experience Chinese culture.
The first enterprise in the industry to attract attention from many top universities
These Harvard students have been interning at SANY for four weeks. Wang Lihe, deputy director of the chairman's office of SANY, pays close attention to these students. "This is the second time Harvard students have come to SANY for internships; a group of students also came last summer. This year, two Harvard professors and two MIT professors have already come to SANY to teach."
According to Wang Lihe, not only Harvard and MIT teachers and students pay attention to SANY's development; many top international institutions also continue to follow SANY. For example, university students from many well-known universities in France, Hong Kong, Taiwan and elsewhere have all interned at SANY.
On January 11 this year, Professor Elisabeth Koll of Harvard Business School and 45 MBA students took the initiative to visit SANY. At that time, Harvard University wrote a SANY case for the first time and included it in the Harvard case library, setting off a wave of studying SANY at Harvard.
It is understood that in the SANY case written by Harvard University, a large amount of space is devoted to introducing SANY's development journey from China to the world. Among them, the case also highlights SANY's successful acquisition of Germany's Putzmeister. Whether Chinese or foreign media, all have held a positive attitude toward SANY's acquisition of Putzmeister. SANY Heavy Industry President Xiang Wenbo also said that Harvard pays great attention to SANY, and he himself has communicated with two groups of Harvard professors.
In addition, in June this year, Harvard professor Jeffrey Williams said after visiting SANY's Lingang Industrial Park that it is different from many state-owned enterprises. SANY went through a long period of tempering, endured the hardest hardships, and ultimately won in competition in the domestic market.
In the field of lean manufacturing, in 2011, MIT professor and lean manufacturing master James P. Womack visited SANY. After the visit and exchange, he said, "Pragmatic is the impression SANY left on me. I really like the spirit you show; your employees are very energetic and also very diligent. As an independent observer of lean thinking, I am very happy to serve you. I greatly admire your courage."
Regarding how to operate a global enterprise, SANY Heavy Industry Chairman Liang Wengen and Womack held in-depth discussions on modern management and lean management, vertical management and horizontal management. "Everyone must fully understand the process; this is my suggestion to SANY. You have developed particularly fast in China, which is unprecedented in history. I believe your success will also make the world a better place." (This article is from SANY)
