Shi Shaozhong plays chess with colleagues to sharpen his logical thinking

　　He pinpoints locations precisely through distance and angle, realizing the value of his youth with the level and leveling staff in his hands; he walks among gullies and mountains, surveying and mapping a splendid landscape of life with his youth and wisdom; he endures hardship, shoulders heavy responsibilities, and has won unanimous praise for his outstanding performance and unassuming style. He is Shi Shaozhong, surveying engineer and head of the geology and surveying department at Mukong Mine, named a 2011 Entrepreneurial Pacesetter by Chongqing Energy Group's Guizhou Yuneng Company.

　　Giving Up the Three-Foot Podium for a Leveling Staff

　　In 2003, Shi Shaozhong, then 24, was casually leafing through a newspaper when a recruitment notice from a surveying and mapping institute in Guizhou caught his eye. It was this notice that set him on the path of a surveying career to which he would devote himself.

　　After graduating from Guizhou University in 2002, Shi Shaozhong was assigned to teach high school in a mountain village in Guizhou. The three-foot podium could not extinguish his keen interest in his field of study; engineering surveying was closer to his major in computational mathematics and applied software. Upon seeing the recruitment notice, Shi Shaozhong immediately decided to apply, and he stayed at that Guizhou surveying and mapping institute for a full five years. To pursue a greater life ideal, in 2008 he chose to come to Mukong Mine of Chongqing Energy Group's Guizhou Yuneng Company as a surveying technician.

　　At that time, Shi Shaozhong was the only surveyor at the entire mine. New to coal mining, he lacked knowledge of specialized coal mine engineering surveying, and the difficulty of the work can well be imagined. He did not give up: he taught himself coal mine hydrogeology, coal mine exploration surveying, engineering drafting and other subjects; he joined the China Engineering Surveying Technology Forum online to learn specialized coal mine engineering surveying knowledge; and he watched video lectures on corporate management by well-known figures such as Yu Shiwei and attended management training courses elsewhere, systematically learning the entire engineering surveying operation and management process of mine construction to enrich his knowledge. Taking root in the mine, he grew step by step. He not only learned coal mine engineering surveying software and CAD drawing, but also taught himself programming software such as Delphi 7.0, writing and applying relevant software to solve the tedious calculation problems he encountered in daily work. He also obtained the title of surveying engineer and was appointed by the mine to head its newly established geology and surveying department.
