——A Profile of National Excellent Project Manager Wang Yuguang
Wang Yuguang, 38 this year, is the project manager of the Zhengzhou Shenhang Project Management Department of the General Contracting Company of China Construction Seventh Engineering Division. Of medium build, he is capable, sunny, handsome and confident. Since graduating in 1995, he has weathered many storms on the construction front line. "Work is done for yourself" is a sentence he often says. He believes that as a project manager, only by being a little "harsh" on oneself and spending the time others "fritter away" on work and study can one move toward success step by step.
In March 2009, the General Contracting Company of China Construction Seventh Engineering Division won the bid for the Zhengzhou Shenhang Project. The project consists of four 33-story commercial and residential buildings, with a total floor area of 157,000 square meters and a total cost of 220 million yuan. At the time, this was the commercial and residential building project with the greatest height and the largest single contract amount undertaken by the General Contracting Company of China Construction Seventh Engineering Division in Zhengzhou, and it was also an annual key project of China Construction Seventh Engineering Division.
The company decided to recruit the project manager through internal competitive selection. In the fierce competition, Wang Yuguang won over the on-site judges at once with the best project "governance" plan and multiple excellence targets, and became the project manager of the Shenhang Project Management Department.
Although Wang Yuguang had served as a project manager many times before, the projects he had managed were not large in scale and were mostly cement plant projects. Now he was to be responsible for managing a project in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, consisting of four 33-story super-high-rise buildings. He secretly encouraged himself: he must do his utmost and bravely meet the challenge, and do this challenging work well for the enterprise and for himself.
To fulfill the solemn commitment he made to the enterprise during the competitive selection, as soon as he took office, Wang Yuguang led the relevant supervisors of the project department to take the initiative to visit the heads of the local construction management department and learn more about local policies and requirements. At the same time, he organized personnel to squeeze out time to visit other construction sites in downtown Zhengzhou, grasp the latest quality excellence standards and safe and civilized construction norms, and photograph and record good practices at some sites so that they could be compared, rectified and caught up with.
After several days of visits and study, everyone quickly identified their own gaps and clarified the excellence targets for all work. One month later, the construction site took on a completely new look that was striking: in accordance with the requirements of Henan Province's civilized construction norms and the standards of the China Construction CI Manual, the project department built an impressive project office area and living area for external workers; the site enclosure was freshly painted, and signs and boards were clear and eye-catching. To enrich employees' cultural life, a standard basketball court and a night school for migrant workers were built in the living area. To make it convenient for migrant worker couples to live on site and for visiting family members, the meticulous Wang Yuguang also built 16 apartments for migrant worker couples in the living area. This move won praise from migrant workers and was publicized and reported as a model by many news media outlets.
In the project's internal management, Wang Yuguang took the company's first implementation of the risk mortgage contracting responsibility system as an opportunity to vigorously strengthen managers' awareness of risk responsibility, and decomposed indicators such as project progress, quality targets, safe and civilized site creation, expected benefit targets and integrated management of project Party building level by level to each project department and the four building teams on site. In the form of responsibility statements, they clarified the management targets for each stage and node, the overall project management target to be ultimately achieved, and the standards for rewards and penalties at each stage. At the same time, using labor competitions as a carrier, they earnestly carried out stage-based inspection, evaluation and commendation, thereby forming the cohesion and tenacious combat effectiveness of the project management team.
In the competition activities carried out by the project in 2011, the construction team led by Liu Haicheng, building chief of Building No. 2, repeatedly won first place and received large bonuses many times. Wang Yuguang cherished young technical backbones like Liu Haicheng who grew up in practice, and when the company formed a new project organization, he promptly recommended Liu Haicheng as chief engineer of the new project. In just over a year, the Shenhang Project Department promoted as many as 10 middle-level management backbones.
Wang Yuguang believes that "work is done for yourself." He feels that the more experience one accumulates in work, the faster one grows; the more one gives, the greater the progress and the more one gains. People who fear hardship and fatigue and seek pleasure can hardly experience the joy of success.
On site, Wang Yuguang, as project manager, is the busiest person. Scheduling on-site work, coordinating among trades and processes, timely communication of external relations, and various meetings keep him exceptionally busy. But no matter how busy work is, he always arrives at the site before everyone starts work every morning to arrange and explain the day's work in advance; every evening, unless there are special circumstances, he walks around the site to check the implementation of work, often not leaving until around midnight. Although driving from home to the site takes only about ten minutes, he set a rule for himself: every Monday evening he must be on duty at the site to promptly solve various practical problems on site. He said: "If I don't go to the site for a day, I won't sleep soundly at night."
More than ten years of construction career have left Wang Yuguang with a rather serious stomach ulcer. For this reason, he has to keep some dry food in his car all year round, chewing a few bites to stave off hunger when it becomes unbearable, and then continue to throw himself into work.
Under Wang Yuguang's leadership, the managers of the Shenhang Project Management Department are united as one, overcoming difficulties, and in the vigorous labor competitions they constantly set new records in project construction. In the activities of striving for excellence carried out by the enterprise and local authorities, the Shenhang Project Department also repeatedly won trophies and awards. In December 2011, all four super-high-rise buildings of the Shenhang Project were topped out ahead of schedule and were rated as Henan Province Structure Zhongzhou Cup (Provincial Quality Structure) projects. The site was rated as a Henan Province Safe and Civilized Construction Site and won the China Construction CI Excellence Silver Award. The project department successively won honors such as the Excellent Project Management Department of China Construction Seventh Engineering Division, the Demonstration Site for Integrity Culture Entering Projects of China Construction Corporation, and the Five-Good Party Branch of China Construction Corporation. Wang Yuguang was rated as an advanced individual in construction management in Zhengzhou City and Zhengdong New District for two consecutive years, and was rated as an excellent project manager of Henan Province in 2010 and a national excellent project manager in 2011.
With the rapid expansion of the General Contracting Company of China Construction Seventh Engineering Division and the surge in construction projects, in December 2011, before the construction task of the Shenhang Project was completed, the company appointed Wang Yuguang concurrently as project manager of the Zhengzhou Oasis Garden Project, with a total cost of 266 million yuan. Facing dual tasks and dual responsibilities, Wang Yuguang rose to the challenge and always regarded doing these two projects well as his sacred duty!
The Shenhang Project will be delivered for use in June this year. The four 33-story commercial and residential buildings stand shoulder to shoulder in Zhengdong New District, showing passersby the pride of China Construction Seventh Engineering Division and the pride of a gold-medal project manager. At present, the main structure construction of the Oasis Garden Project in Zhengzhou Development Zone is in full swing. Wang Yuguang shuttles back and forth every day between these two key projects of China Construction Seventh Engineering Division. Although it is very hard and tiring, he is always busy and happy, with a smile often on his face, because he feels that "work is done for yourself."
