Fortune magazine has released the "2013 Fortune Global 500" ranking. China, including Taiwan, now has 95 companies on the list, second only to the United States with 132. More than half of the 95 Chinese companies are based in Beijing, and their main businesses span steel, automobiles, resources, chemicals, finance and other sectors. Seven domestic steel enterprises made the list, but two of them posted losses last year. Chinese cement companies rank highest among global cement firms, and notably, China National Building Material Group ranks second among global building materials enterprises.

Seven steel enterprises make the "Global 500"; two posted losses last year

Baosteel Group, Hebei Iron and Steel Group, Shagang Group, Shougang Group, Wuhan Iron and Steel Group, Xinxing Cathay International Group and Ansteel Group — all seven domestic steel enterprises had previously appeared on the 2012 Fortune Global 500 list. In addition, companies with steel-related businesses such as China Minmetals Corporation and Zhejiang Materials Industry Group also made the list. It is worth noting that Fortune's Global 500 ranking is weighted toward operating revenue. Data show that among the seven steel enterprises on the list, Hebei Iron and Steel Group and Ansteel Group had negative net profits.

According to the "2013 Fortune Global 500" ranking, Baosteel Group's 2012 operating revenue was US$45.683 billion, down US$2.633 billion from the previous year, and its ranking fell 25 places to 222nd. This marks the tenth consecutive year that Baosteel Group has made the Fortune Global 500.

Hebei Iron and Steel Group made the list for the fifth consecutive year, with 2012 operating revenue of US$39.280 billion, up US$585 million from the previous year, ranking 269th, unchanged from the previous year.

China's largest private steel mill — Jiangsu Shagang Group — also made the list for the fifth consecutive year, with 2012 operating revenue of US$34.558 billion, up US$2.461 billion from the previous year, ranking 318th, up 28 places from the previous year.

Shougang Group, which underwent asset restructuring, first made the list in 2011 and has now been on it for three consecutive years. Its 2012 operating revenue was US$34.330 billion, ranking 322nd this year, down 27 places from the previous year.

Wuhan Iron and Steel Group has made the Fortune Global 500 for four consecutive years. Its 2012 operating revenue was US$33.882 billion, up US$378 million from the previous year, ranking 328th, down 7 places from the previous year.

Xinxing Cathay International Group and Ansteel Group, which made the list last year, had 2012 operating revenues of US$28.579 billion and US$23.588 billion respectively, ranking 406th and 493rd on the Global 500. Ansteel Group's ranking fell sharply by 31 places from last year, placing it second from the bottom among the 95 Chinese companies on the list.

  Chinese cement companies rank highest

A total of three cement enterprises worldwide made this year's ranking. Despite the dual pressures of economic downturn and overcapacity, two Chinese cement enterprises still made this year's Fortune Global 500, and both ranked ahead of CRH, the only global cement giant on the list. China Resources Group ranked 187th with revenue of US$52.4 billion, entering the global top 200 for the first time; China National Building Material Group ranked 319th with operating revenue of US$34.46 billion. Both companies moved up 46 places from 2012. Ireland's CRH, however, fell 51 places, from 435th last year to 486th. This year's list did not include global cement giants such as France's Lafarge and Switzerland's Holcim, showing that the status of Chinese cement enterprises in the global cement industry has been elevated once again.

Benefiting from China's urbanization, six construction enterprises make the list

In the construction sector, thanks to China's long-term urbanization process and massive domestic infrastructure investment in recent years, Chinese construction enterprises showed strong growth momentum on the ranking, with six companies making the list this year. Among them, China Railway Construction Corporation ranked 100th with US$77.1647 billion (up 11 places), China Railway Group Limited ranked 102nd with US$76.711 billion (up 10 places), and China Communications Construction Company ranked with US$47.3326 billion...
