On May 7, a reporter learned from Shanxi No.4 Construction Group that the main stadium of Shanxi Sports Center, one of the "Top Ten Buildings of the Provincial Capital" and constructed under general contracting by Shanxi No.4 Construction, has won the 11th China Civil Engineering Zhan Tianyou Award. This is the second time a Shanxi construction enterprise has received this honor, nine years after winning the 4th Zhan Tianyou Award in 2004.

The Zhan Tianyou Award is the highest honor for scientific and technological innovation in engineering construction projects in China's civil engineering field (National Innovation Project), generally regarded as the top technical award. The winning projects are all outstanding civil engineering construction projects with remarkable achievements in scientific and technological innovation (especially independent innovation) and the application of science and technology. The award fully embodies "innovation," "advanced nature," and "authority."

The main stadium of Shanxi Sports Center is what everyone knows as the "Red Lantern Stadium." The project features an innovative design, complex structure, high technological content, and great construction difficulty. The building covers a floor area of 90,066 m2 and can accommodate 60,000 spectators. Its plan is elliptical, and its roof is a double-curved drum-shaped structure that is higher in the east and west and lower in the north and south.

Shanxi Sports Center is located on the south side of Changfeng Cultural and Business District in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, bordering Jinyang Lake to the west and the Fen River to the east. Construction of the center began in March 2009. It is the largest sports venue project started in Shanxi Province since the founding of the People's Republic of China and a landmark project for Shanxi's sports undertakings to achieve a new leap forward. Shanxi Sports Center creates conditions for Shanxi Province to achieve large-scale, intensive, and modernized management of professional sports teams, and can host large national comprehensive games or international single-sport competitions, fundamentally changing the backward situation of sports venue facilities in Shanxi Province. The main stadium is the "Red Lantern Stadium," nicknamed the "Phoenix Nest."

Du Rui, general manager of Shanxi No.4 Construction, said that during construction of the main stadium project, the company actively promoted the "10 New Technologies in the Construction Industry," earnestly implemented the concept of "four savings and one environmental protection," and carried out research on key issues and "industry-university-research" cooperation aimed at engineering difficulties, ultimately summarizing and forming seven key innovative technologies of representative significance.

In terms of design, the integrated scheme combining the gymnasium, swimming hall, and velodrome effectively consolidated land use, saved public space, and reduced investment. 'After the project is completed, it will play an important role in improving urban functions, enhancing the city's image, and elevating the city's quality.' According to relevant personnel from the Provincial Engineering Construction Affairs Administration, because sports venues in the province had long lacked the capacity to host comprehensive competitions, Shanxi Province was one of the very few provinces in China that had never hosted a national-level sports games. After completion, Shanxi Sports Center can meet the needs of daily training for professional teams and mass fitness activities while also undertaking large domestic comprehensive sports events or international single-sport competitions.
