报道称，美国旧金山湾区地铁公共交通系统(BART)员工大罢工始于7月1日，起因是地铁员工工会与资方就工资福利的谈判未达成预期目标。大罢工导致该市交通陷入瘫痪，造成的经济损失达约5亿美元，日输客量为40万人次的地铁运输中断，导致数十万人无法按时抵达工作地点。
旧金山湾区委员会称，据保守估计，该地区单单因罢工造成的工人生产力损失每天至少为7300万美元，经济活动损失更是难以数计。该委员会称，此次罢工也带来了“巨大的环境影响”。愈演愈烈的交通拥堵产生了大约1600万磅碳排放，每天几乎浪费了80万加仑的汽油，经济损失可达330万美元。
