省交通运输厅党组书记、厅长刘明欣透露，截至2012年底，湖南农村公路总里程达19万公里，实现了乡乡通公路和99.8%的行政村通公路，100%的乡镇和90%的行政村通水泥(沥青)路，乡镇和行政村通班车率分别达到99.87%和87.15%。在全省23.4万公里公路里程中，农村公路占到了81.2%。
然而，湖南农村公路扶贫攻坚任务依然很重。目前，武陵山、罗霄山集中连片特困区迄今还有4289个行政村没有实现通畅，需要建设农村公路25626公里;“十二五”原来规划建设的5万公里连通工程尚未启动，目前只在集中连片特困地区实施了5000公里，农村公路“断头路”较多。
