Cleaning and Maintenance of Hydraulic Excavator Hydraulic Systems

Keep Hydraulic Oil Clean

　　Store oil in a clean location, and exercise great care when changing or adding oil. Only use a clean funnel equipped with a fine mesh strainer to pour oil from the container into the tank. Of course, the oil you use must be of the type recommended by Hitachi Construction Machinery.

　　Keep the System Clean

　　(1) Regularly Replace Hydraulic Oil and Filters

　　Good hydraulic oil contains various additives that prevent the oil from deteriorating.

　　However, these additives lose their effectiveness after a period of time. Therefore, the oil should be replaced regularly to ensure the additives remain effective.

　　Filters can only absorb a limited amount of dirt particles and other impurities from the oil.

　　For Hitachi Construction Machinery ZX series (medium-sized) machines, replace the hydraulic tank return filter every 1,000 working hours, and clean the hydraulic tank suction filter when changing the hydraulic oil to keep the system clean.

　　When replacing the hydraulic oil filter, check the bottom of the filter for metal particles or debris; the presence of copper or iron filings indicates that the hydraulic pump, hydraulic motor, or valves may be damaged or about to fail, while rubber material indicates damage to the hydraulic cylinder seals.

　　(2) Regularly Drain Contaminants from the Tank

　　Regularly draining water and sediment from the tank is very important for removing impurities from the oil, but regularly replacing the hydraulic oil in the entire hydraulic system is also very important. This is the only reliable way to completely remove system impurities, oxidized hydraulic oil, and other harmful contaminants. Then, the clean hydraulic oil recommended by Hitachi Construction Machinery should be refilled into the hydraulic system.

　　Drain contaminants from the hydraulic tank reservoir every 250 working hours.

　　(3) Cleaning

　　If the hydraulic oil becomes contaminated, especially when the pump, cylinders, or motor are damaged, all hydraulic oil must be replaced and the tank cleaned.

　　Keep the Hydraulic Excavator Work Area Clean

　　When adding hydraulic oil to the tank or refilling it, ensure the area around the filter cover is clean.

　　Use only clean funnels or containers.

　　Never allow dirt to enter the system.

　　When servicing the hydraulic system, use only clean plastic caps to seal the ends of lines.
　　
　　When servicing hydraulic components, the workbench must be absolutely clean.

　　Check the condition of the tools used; they should also be very clean.
