The pyramid that was razed is located in the town of San Martín de Porres, several kilometers north of Lima, the capital of Peru. It is one of 12 pyramids at the “El Paraíso” archaeological site and dates back at least 4,000 years. Archaeological evidence shows that 1,500 to 3,000 residents once lived near the area, and they used more than 100,000 tons of rock to build this pyramid, which was 6 meters high and covered an area of 2,500 square meters. According to Peru's Ministry of Culture, long before Columbus discovered the Inca civilization in South America, this place had already become an important religious and administrative center at the time.
Rafael, deputy minister of Peru's Ministry of Culture, said that this invaluable cultural relic was tragically destroyed on June 29. Two local real estate development companies sent construction workers and used heavy machinery such as excavators and bulldozers to carry out a “barbaric demolition” of this historical artifact.
In order to clear the site and destroy evidence, after destroying the pyramid, the developers set fire to the rubble. When they tried to destroy three other pyramids, bystanders stopped them in time, and they then fled in all directions.
At present, the Peruvian government has filed a lawsuit against the two real estate development companies suspected of violating the law, imposed a fine of US$1.32 million (about 8.1 million yuan), and confiscated their mechanical equipment.
