Utilizing BIM technology, Internet technology, and IoT technology, while constructing a physical expressway, a BIM-based expressway model with the same life cycle as the physical expressway is also being built on a GIS (Geographic Information System) platform. During project implementation, digital, model-based, and visual management of planning, quality, safety, schedule, and cost is achieved.

Since the beginning of this year, Jilin Provincial Expressway Group Co., Ltd. has accelerated the application of digital construction technology in expressway projects. In the Shuangtao Expressway project, the research topic "Research on Application of BIM Technology in Expressway Construction Management" has been carried out, using BIM technology and intelligent equipment to provide technical support for creating safe construction sites and building digital expressways.

"We will fully apply BIM technology in expressway project construction, use BIM for construction control during the construction process, and achieve a digital expressway during the control process," said Zhang Shulin, Chief Engineer of Jilin Provincial Expressway Group Co., Ltd.

It is understood that the Shuangtao Expressway has a total length of 187 kilometers and is located in a plain area with flat terrain, a low proportion of bridges, and no tunnel projects, which provides a good platform for developing and testing project applications of BIM technology. At the beginning of the project design, Jilin Provincial Expressway Group Co., Ltd. cooperated with the Provincial Transportation Planning and Design Institute to carry out comprehensive design based on BIM technology. Based on sub-item and sub-divisional projects, BIM modeling was conducted for all engineering structures such as roads, bridges, interchanges, culverts, drainage, and protection. The BIM model was integrated into the GIS system platform at a 1:1 ratio, and a three-dimensional route optimization decision system and auxiliary route selection decision tools were used to achieve large-area route selection and multi-scheme comparison, optimizing the route scheme.

At present, a BIM model based on the GIS system platform has been established for the entire 187-kilometer project line; more than 100 sets of equipment, including intelligent compaction equipment, intelligent pile foundation equipment, intelligent mixing equipment, and intelligent paving equipment, have been introduced and installed on all construction machinery involved in the entire line to test BIM model data collection and provide big data support for promoting intelligent management; the expressway construction management platform system is being developed simultaneously and is planned for full application during the 2019 construction period.
