According to foreign media reports, on the evening of January 22 local time, Musk's Boring Company proposed a 6.5-mile-long "proof of concept" tunnel under Los Angeles at Culver City Hall, hoping to solve the region's traffic problems. Prior to this, the Boring Company's plan to dig a 2-mile-long "test tunnel" under Hawthorne, California, where SpaceX is headquartered, had already been approved.
Now, this longer new tunnel will be able to carry out all necessary certification tests.
It is learned that the five council members of Culver City Hall have differing opinions on Musk's tunnel project, especially after the billionaire recently made controversial remarks about public transportation.
Meghan Sahli-Wells expressed that she is very concerned about a private transportation company competing with the public transit system. "I don't believe a private enterprise will focus on equity. I have never seen this situation before." "Although it looks very sexy and very easy, from the public's perspective, it is only a semi-finished product."
However, Jeffrey Cooper hopes Musk will bring this "magic" to the city with 40,000 residents. "I think simply saying 'no' is foolish." Cooper hopes the company can bring a more reliable proposal to the city hall in the future.
Jehn Balajadia, operations director of the Boring Company, pointed out that these tunnels that can be used for public transportation systems are called Loop. In the documents submitted to the city hall, the Boring Company introduced that Loop is a high-speed underground public transportation system that allows automatic electric skates to transport passengers at speeds of 125-150 miles per hour. In addition, this tunnel is also suitable for the hovering, near-supersonic Hyperloop that Musk originally proposed.
Now, all Musk needs to do is get government approval for his Los Angeles underground tunnel plan.
