Recently, at the construction site of the Nanchang Riverside Expressway project—a major infrastructure project in Jiangxi—a spectacular scene of rapid grabbing and impressive construction unfolded. A row of busy orange construction equipment continuously swung their massive arms to grab and dig, forming a beautiful sight that attracted people's attention. These uniform pieces of equipment are six Bauer GB34 hydraulic grabs performing diaphragm wall construction on site.

The Nanchang Riverside Expressway project is a major project with complex working conditions, a tight schedule, and heavy tasks. The contractor is China Railway Third Bureau, and the subcontractor is Hu Zhiliang, a local from Nanchang. This project is an expressway close to the Gan River, and the diaphragm wall is mainly for seepage prevention and reinforcement of the riverside embankment. The soil layer is about 9 meters thick, followed by 5 meters of fine silty sand, 10 meters of coarse sand, 9 meters of pebbles, and 1 meter of argillaceous siltstone. The fine silty sand contains about 2 meters of rubble used for embankment reinforcement. Because the working surface is on the river embankment, there is no space for construction. The original planned construction period was six months, but due to demolition issues, it was compressed to four months. The specific conditions of the trench are: depth 33 meters, width 350mm, and one meter into rock. The uniaxial compressive strength is about 3-5MPa.
For such a high-pressure project, the contractor China Railway Third Bureau was concerned about whether the project could be completed within the schedule and required the subcontractor Hu Zhiliang to find a way to complete the task with quality and quantity within the schedule. It is evident that this project is not so much heavy in tasks as it is extremely tight in schedule. Hu Zhiliang felt that although the four-month schedule was extremely tight, he was confident. Experience told him he could complete the task within the planned schedule. Therefore, before undertaking the project, he promised the general contractor: with his years of construction experience, he would concentrate forces and organize Bauer hydraulic grabs to tackle the project, ensuring that nothing would delay the construction.
Why did Hu Zhiliang dare to make such a guarantee? The reason is that he is a long-time customer of Bauer equipment and knows well the outstanding characteristics of Bauer hydraulic grabs: "stable grabbing, accurate grabbing, fast grabbing, and economical grabbing," especially in dense and hard strata where their advantages are particularly obvious. In addition, Hu Zhiliang's operators are all veteran drivers with more than 10 years of experience operating Bauer hydraulic grabs. They understand the performance of Bauer hydraulic grabs very well and are very effective in maintenance and operation. To this end, he organized six Bauer GB34 hydraulic grabs to enter the construction site, starting a scene of Bauer machines battling on site and competing to "grab" the schedule.
The Bauer GB34 hydraulic grab is indeed a classic model. It lived up to expectations, with stable performance during construction, competing with each other, and full of "grabbing" power. Full-load operation not only had a low failure rate but also saved more energy than ordinary equipment. The six Bauer GB34s, the earliest manufactured in 2009 and the latest in 2011, all well-maintained, completed an average of one trench panel every 35 hours. Their high efficiency and quality demonstrated that Bauer grabs are indeed capable of handling more than 90% of domestic diaphragm wall constructions suitable for hydraulic grab construction.
Up to now, there has been no downtime for maintenance during continuous construction, and construction is proceeding according to the predetermined plan. A total of 650 trench panels have been completed, accounting for 90% of the entire project, and the project is basically at its end. This has led the contractor to highly praise the Bauer GB34 hydraulic grabs. Originally, they did not believe the project could be completed in four months and had asked Hu Zhiliang to add more equipment. Now it can basically be completed in three months, effectively three months ahead of schedule. The Bauer GB34 has successfully completed the important task of racing to "grab" the schedule.
