From December 26 to 27, 2017, the first Yunnan Provincial Technical Skills Competition for Engineering Survey and Geotechnical Engineering Technicians was successfully held in Kunming, producing the country's first provincial-level all-around technical champion in the industry. This marks another first for Yunnan in the engineering survey industry, following its successful hosting of the first provincial geotechnical testing skills competition and the first national skills competition, fully demonstrating the excellence of the engineering survey industry in Yunnan, the "kingdom of geology."
In order to implement the requirement of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China to shift from high-speed economic growth to high-quality development, foster an atmosphere of upholding professional ethics, strengthening quality awareness, and persisting in learning and improvement, and promote the building of talent teams in the survey industry, the Yunnan Provincial Construction Trade Union and the Yunnan Provincial Survey and Design Quality Association took the initiative to innovate and hosted this competition with strong support from the Provincial Leading Group for Employee Economic and Technological Innovation, the Provincial Federation of Trade Unions, the Provincial Department of Human Resources and Social Security, and the Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. Member units such as the Survey Institute of Yunnan Design Institute Group and Yunnan Land and Resources Vocational College co-organized the event.
This competition was a comprehensive test of all-around technical skills in the industry, attracting great attention and active participation from practitioners across the province. More than 1,000 contestants from 165 survey units in Yunnan were divided into five competition zones. After arduous preliminary and semi-final rounds, 50 contestants from 27 survey units finally advanced to the finals.
Through comprehensive assessment by the on-site judging panel and a review panel composed of 15 experts from across the province's industry, the technical champion, runner-up, and the first, second, and third prizes as well as excellence awards for skilled personnel in this skills competition were ultimately selected.
Su Li, executive director of the competition organizing committee, vice president of the Engineering Survey and Geotechnical Branch of the China Survey and Design Association, and director of the Survey Institute of Yunnan Design Institute Group, said: "Engineering quality and safety concern the national economy and people's livelihood. Survey and design are the soul of engineering quality and safety, and survey and design itself must be carried out strictly step by step. Engineering survey and geotechnical engineering are the most frontline work in the survey and design industry and the foundation for ensuring safety and quality. Through this competition, our province's survey industry management measures and capabilities have been improved, achieving the goals of training through competition, promoting learning through competition, and fostering training through competition. The enthusiasm and sense of pride of practitioners have been enhanced, and at the same time, the reputation of Yunnan's survey and design industry has been polished once again." During the competition, the Yunnan Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development also conducted survey quality training for more than 100 survey units across the province.
