The Yuhan Road Tunnel in Jinan, with a total length of 2.755 kilometers, runs north-south through the city with four lanes in both directions and a design speed limit of 50 km/h. It is currently China's longest urban tunnel with the shallowest burial depth, the most complex engineering geology, and the greatest construction difficulty.
The reporter learned from the Jinan Urban and Rural Transport Committee that the mined section of the Yuhan Road Tunnel is 2.3 kilometers long, with a small spacing between the two tubes. It is China's longest urban ultra-shallow-buried double-arch tunnel in a composite form with ultra-small clear spacing. The tunnel roof is on average only 7 meters from the ground surface, making construction highly difficult.
Qu Fanfeng, deputy manager of the Fifth Branch of Jinan Urban Construction Group, said that because the drill-and-blast method and shield tunneling could not be used for tunnel excavation, 22 large cantilever boring machines were deployed along the entire tunnel line to improve construction efficiency. "Using this kind of boring machine as the main method for driving a tunnel in urban areas is the first case in China."
According to the "Q3 2017 Traffic Analysis Report on Major Chinese Cities" jointly released by the Planning Research Institute of the Ministry of Transport of China, the China Academy of Transportation Sciences, and Amap, Jinan surpassed Harbin, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Dalian, Changchun, Shanghai, Xi'an, and Kunming, ranking first with a peak congestion delay index of 2.065. The completion of the Yuhan Road Tunnel in Jinan is expected to ease congestion in Jinan, the "capital of traffic jams."
