Recently, the Anhui Provincial Department of Transport issued the Anhui Provincial Expressway Network Plan (2016-2030). By 2020, the province will form a "four vertical and eight horizontal" expressway network.
Anhui Province has already planned 5,799 kilometers of expressways; this round adds 20 new expressways totaling 1,685 kilometers; by 2030, the total planned expressway mileage in Anhui Province will reach 7,484 kilometers. The newly added expressways in this round are mainly divided into five categories:
First, expressways to enhance Hefei's function as a national comprehensive hub and strengthen Hefei's radiation to surrounding areas. Planned projects include Mingguang-Hefei, Hefei-Huoqiu-Zhoukou, Hefei-Huoshan-Shangcheng, Wuwei (Taqiao)-Hefei, Hefei-Wuwei (Shijian), and Chuzhou-Hefei expressways.
Second, expressways to enhance the traffic capacity of important transport corridors. Planned projects in northern Anhui include the Xuzhou-Guzhen-Bengbu Expressway; planned projects in the Wanjiang area include the Anqing-Jiujiang Expressway, the Anqing Haikou Yangtze River Highway Bridge, and the Wuhu Taishan Road Yangtze River Highway Bridge.
Third, expressway planning projects to optimize the road network and achieve short direct connections between cities, including Xuzhou-Huaibei-Fuyang, Suzhou-Fuyang, and Mengcheng-Bozhou expressways in northern Anhui.
Fourth, inter-provincial exit corridors to strengthen connections between Anhui Province and neighboring provinces. Planned projects include the Lai'an-Luhe and Taihu-Qichun expressways.
Fifth, tourism highways, urban ring roads, and road network connecting lines. Planned projects include the Chuzhou branch of the Shanghai-Shaanxi Expressway, the Huizhou branch of the Hangzhou-Ruili Expressway, the Hefei Ring Expressway connecting line, the Anqing branch of the Shanghai-Wuhan Expressway, and the Tiantangzhai branch of the Shanghai-Chengdu Expressway.
In addition, four long-term prospect expressway lines of about 397 kilometers are planned, namely: Fengyang-Dingyuan, He County-Hefei, He County-Wuwei, and Xuancheng-Gantang-Dongzhi expressways.
By 2020, Anhui Province will resolve the lack of expressway access in four counties—Jingde, Jing County, Shitai, and Guzhen—and the problem that Huoqiu county seat is far from a general expressway interchange. During 2021-2030, the road network layout will be further improved, congested expressway sections will be expanded and upgraded, and the service capacity of the expressway network will be comprehensively enhanced. Three expressways are listed as capacity expansion and upgrading projects: the Jieshou-Bengbu section of G36 Ningluo Expressway, the Xuancheng-Anqing-Susong section of G50 Shanghai-Chongqing Expressway, and the Wuhu hub-Tongling Zhongming hub section of G4211.
At the same time, the plan points out that short direct expressway connections will be achieved between all provincial-administered cities in the province, and expressway connectivity will be achieved in every county. The riverside city belt and the Huai-Beng-Hefei-Wuhu-Xuancheng development belt will each be served by two expressways; Hefei will have 14 expressways connecting to surrounding areas; the Wanjiang area will have 10 expressway river crossings. Anhui Province will also have 50 expressway exits to neighboring provinces (20 to Jiangsu, 1 to Shandong, 12 to Henan, 5 to Hubei, 6 to Jiangxi, and 6 to Zhejiang); the G40 Shanghai-Shaanxi Expressway Hefei-Nanjing section, G4211 Nanjing-Wuhu Expressway, G42S Shanghai-Wuhan Expressway Ma'anshan section, G25 Changchun-Shenzhen Expressway Tianchang section, G50 Shanghai-Chongqing Expressway Anhui section, G36 Ningluo Expressway Anhui section, and G30 Lianyungang-Horgos Expressway Anhui section connecting Anhui Province to neighboring provinces will all meet the standard of six lanes or more.
