Recently, the major science and technology project of the Ministry of Transport, “Research on Key Technologies for Construction and Maintenance Management of the Duge Beipanjiang Long-Span Steel Truss Girder Cable-Stayed Bridge,” jointly undertaken by Guizhou Expressway Group Co., Ltd., CCCC Highway Consultants Co., Ltd., Southwest Jiaotong University, Guizhou Highway Engineering Group Co., Ltd., and CCCC Second Harbor Engineering Co., Ltd., successfully passed acceptance by the Department of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Transport. The project research results have generally reached the international advanced level, among which the new construction technology of longitudinal movement and cantilever assembly of the bottom track of the whole segment of the steel truss girder is at the international leading level.

CCCC Highway Consultants is the designer of the Beipanjiang Bridge and also a major participant in the research project. During the research process, the company proposed a “central longitudinal girder + large secondary crossbeam” structural system adapted to the plate-truss combination; recommended the incremental launching construction technology for the side span; established an icing prediction theoretical model for long-span steel truss girder cable-stayed bridges, and developed an icing monitoring and image recognition early warning system, making extensive efforts for the successful acceptance of the project.

The project acceptance work was presided over by Xie Suhua, deputy director of the Transportation Science and Technology Management Center. Nine authoritative experts in the industry (including 2 financial experts), including Zhou Haitao, former chief engineer of the Ministry of Transport, Li Shoushan, national survey and design master, and Zhang Jinquan, president of the Highway Research Institute of the Ministry of Transport, formed an acceptance expert group to conduct acceptance review of the project.

The Transportation Science and Technology Management Center and expert representatives first conducted on-site investigation at the Duge Beipanjiang Bridge to inspect the application of scientific and technological achievements on the Beipanjiang Bridge. The heads of each sub-topic of the project focused their reports on new technologies, new processes, and new materials adopted by the Beipanjiang Bridge. Through means such as on-site testing, model tests, theoretical analysis, and numerical simulation, the project team carried out research on wind environment in deep-cut canyons and wind-induced response of long-span bridges, main girder structural systems and construction technologies of steel truss girder cable-stayed bridges, main girder construction and erection of extra-long-span steel truss girder cable-stayed bridges in mountainous areas, and operation management of extra-long-span steel truss girder cable-stayed bridges in mountainous areas, and achieved remarkable results. The supporting role of scientific and technological research in the construction of the world's highest bridge, the Duge Beipanjiang Bridge, was fully affirmed by the investigation team.

At the acceptance meeting, the acceptance expert group carefully listened to the project team's report, carefully reviewed the relevant technical documents and financial reports, and after full questioning and discussion, the experts unanimously agreed that the project team had achieved innovative research results: first, a method for determining equivalent static wind loads under non-stationary wind action for long-span steel truss girder cable-stayed bridges in deep mountain canyons was proposed; second, a new construction technology and related equipment for longitudinal movement and cantilever assembly of the bottom track of the whole segment of the steel truss girder were developed, and a data acquisition and posture visualization dynamic monitoring system for the construction process was developed; third, a “central longitudinal girder + large secondary crossbeam” structural system adapted to the plate-truss combination was proposed; fourth, a new walking-type process for steel truss girder joints with automatic following of incremental launching equipment was developed; fifth, an icing prediction theoretical model was established, and an icing monitoring and image recognition early warning system for long-span steel truss girder cable-stayed bridges was developed. The project research results effectively solved the key technical problems of the Duge Beipanjiang long-span steel truss girder cable-stayed bridge and supported the high-quality and safe completion of the bridge. The research results have been popularized and applied on the Qingshuihe Bridge, with significant economic and social benefits and broad application prospects.

Finally, the acceptance expert group unanimously agreed that “Research on Key Technologies for Construction and Maintenance Management of the Duge Beipanjiang Long-Span Steel Truss Girder Cable-Stayed Bridge” passed acceptance, and recommended further strengthening follow-up observation of the project and increasing efforts to promote and apply the results.
